 CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

SCARLETT

She hadn't woken up yet, but according to the doctor, the craniotomy had gone well, and all that was left to be done was for Azalea to wake up so that they could tell how successful the surgery went. We were all relieved, especially the Diamonds. Kai's dad held their mom tighter and kissed her on her head. Karis and his girlfriend hugged each other like it was their last time seeing each other, Remi smiled and passed his hand through his hair before his mom hugged him too. The bi-racial twins, Scarlett and I all sighed in relief with happy smiles. Savannah pulled Kai into a hug and pecked him on the cheek. He gripped her sweater tightly and returned the hug.

"We need her awake as soon as possible to be sure that she doesn't have memory loss or any defects with her motor skills, so she should probably be awake within the next two hours. After the examination, she would need to be put back to sleep immediately. Only two people can visit her at a time for now. Her nurse will be here to let you know when you can see her as soon as she has been transported to the recovery unit. You will be notified as soon as she wakes up."

"Thank you so much Doctor Sydney." Mr Diamond said and shook the doctor's hand firmly before she walked away.

"Oh, Paul" Brigida sighed and engulfed him in a hug again.

I turned to Kai to see if I could master up enough courage to hug him also, but he still had that hard unapproachable expression on his face. The twins and Scarlett had gathered around him and were chattering excitedly.

I stood up abruptly and timidly walked towards him. As soon as I stepped before him his blue eyes rose to connect to my green ones and my breath hitched. It was a bad time, but I couldn't help but admire his blue, blue eyes. I fidgeted with my fingers as I admired his facial features despite his cold stare. I found myself involuntarily taking a fearful step back. I groaned inwardly when his expression worsened. If he kept it up his veins were going to burst open.

"What do you want?" He asked. That was cold.

Our other three friends stopped chattering and turned to look at us.

The tension in my chest was too much, and there was no way I could have a civilized conversation with him with the others looking at us. Plus, his angry tone towards me was embarrassing.

"I j-just want to t-talk."

He didn't respond. He just stared at me.

"Please"

He sighed, stood up and began walking. He led us through the hallway and to the entrance and the car park. We found an empty bench in the middle of one of the gardens and we sat.

There was a long moment of silence between us before I spoke.

"C-can I h-hug y-you?"

He turned to look at me. "You don't even want to be near me."

"N-no" I shook my head. "I-m s-sitting here-"

"You flinch every time I get close to you. You got better with your stuttering. Heck, we could hear you a bit better. And now because of a stupid mistake-."

I frowned. "I- it wasn't y-your f-fault. I sh- should have b-been there for you."

"You thought I was going to hurt you".

"I'm st- still getting used to your-"

Kai chuckled dryly. "Did someone hurt you when you were little?" His jaw ticked.
