CHAPTER THIRTEEN

SCARLETT

His stares made me nervous; more nervous than I had already been. He made it difficult for me to concentrate in class that Monday. I had already been distracted by what had happened between us in Paris and I had been so sure that he had been preparing to let me down gently. I had heard around school that he didn't care how he broke things off with his girls if he was getting rid of them. I had even heard one time that after having sex with one girl in the supply closet, she had assumed that they were automatically in a relationship. He had told her otherwise, but she had been unyielding about it, claiming that he just had second thoughts and that she would give him time to adjust to having a real relationship with a real woman like herself. So, he settled with breaking up with her in front of the entire school, and on her social media pages.

Being broken up with, in public, was brutal, and I did not plan on it happening to me. So, I made up my mind; that when he finally approached me to end things, I would accept it and try to move on. I knew it would hurt me and I would cry and break down and panic, but eventually, I was going to get over it. I would probably remain single for the rest of my life too. My life-long crush on Kai had been so great that I had not ever thought of being with anyone else. I was pitiable.

"Any questions before we continue?" I heard Ms Campbell, our biology teacher, ask. "Yes, Mr Diamond..."

"I have trouble concentrating from where I am. May I please be permitted to move to the front? Just for today."

I did not turn to look at him.

"Oh yes, of course, if anyone is willing to share their desk, why not?"

"Thank you" He replied. I sensed triumph in his voice.

As Kai moved his chair and belongings to wherever he wanted to move in front, people shifted to make room for him, but he ignored them all. Ms Campbell continued to teach. I wondered where he was going since there were no other spaces in front.

Then it clicked. Immediately, I saw him place his seat and his laptop beside mine.

Was he going to break up with me in class???

I felt dread suddenly begin to heavily weigh me down. I turned to look at him and he smiled lightly.

"Hi" He whispered.

"H-hi" I responded.

"I want to talk to you."

"O- oh"

"Just want to ask if you are busy tonight. I want to pass by, so we talk."

"Oh, o okay. We can t-talk. I'm free."

"Great, we'll leave together then" He smiled.

I nodded.

I felt his hand take mine in his and I held my breath, warm feelings sizzling in my chest.

Were we ending our almost relationship or what?

Before the school day ended, I called Cole and told him not to worry himself or Joel about picking me up. So, when it was time for me to go home, I joined Kai who called their chauffeur for a very sick Azalea before we left.

The car ride was very quiet. Like he did the day we went to Savannah's house, he held my hand till we got to my place. The only difference was that the silence was uncomfortable. I wondered what he was thinking about, especially since his facial expression was as blank as it usually was. The only times I saw him ever show any emotion were when he was with me and sometimes when he was with his friends.
