CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
SCARLETT
As soon as I exited Azalea's room, I was immediately met by a more relieved, less angry Kai. He grabbed my hand and steered me toward the entrance of the hospital. He had both of our bags in his hand. In my confused state, I decided to follow him till we got to his dad's white Land Cruiser.
"Wh- where are we g-going?"
"I'm taking you home, and then we can talk about what you told me earlier."
I gulped. "H- how will your p- parents get home?"
"The chauffeur will pick them up."
I nodded.
The car ride was silent, and I was nervous. Surprisingly, I didn't regret telling him the truth. My only worry was that I hoped he kept it a secret. I did want to trust him, and I wanted him to trust me. Telling him that Cole was my brother did not look like a big deal, but it was to me. It brought back a whole lot of bad memories and issues that Cole and his parents took pains to bury and legally lock up. We needed it to stay that way for his sake and mine. Maybe one day, he would want to tell his story and maybe I would too, but at that time, it was too early. The media were brutal when it came to gossip, especially gossip about public figures and they would make our lives hell.
When we got to my room, Kai placed our bags on my bed and sat on my sofa. He patted the seat beside himself, and I quickly sat beside him to show him I wasn't scared of him. I wanted to score good points with him, especially after the talk I had had with Azalea. I made a bold move and shifted closer to him to interlace my palms with his.
If he was surprised, he didn't show it.
"Now, please explain this to me."
"I-I wouldn't be a-able to say much, because it brings back bad m- memories."
He nodded and turned to face me on the sofa without letting go of my hands. "Take your time."
I sighed and began talking. "C- Cole and I were born by the s- same parents; same mother and same f- father, but they d- died. On the d-day that they died, we were in the h- hospital. Well, I was a- admitted there because I had bad injuries. The s- scar at my lower back is a reminder, I had to go through major surgery. My d- dad and I had b- been in a car a- accident and Cole had been th- there with my mom who was also f- fighting for her l- life."
I didn't know I was panting until Kai let go of my hand and held my neck tenderly with both hands.
"Breathe" He whispered.
I nodded and tried to calm down.
"I'm n- not exactly sure how the Walsh's f- found out. They have shares in the hospital and were there for business. I th- think they said they heard a doctor t- talking about our case. That was a- after both of our parents had passed away. They couldn't have ch-children, so as you know, they adopted Cole. They didn't want to adopt m- me, so they put me in one of the best o- orphanages in New- New York. The Yang family or- orphanage; Prestige Home. With the instruction of Cole's dad, th- they hid me whenever we h- had visitors and they m- made everyone who ever s-stayed in the orphanage whilst I- I was there sign an NDA at 18 years. I was just being t-taken care off there, but I h-had special p-privileges."
"So, you are not his mother's relative at all."
"No" I shook my head. "Cole would n- never abandon me. He w- would always make me f- fly to visit him during s-summer vacations, so we had to c- come up with that l- lie to feed to the m- media."
