CHAPTER FOUR

AZALEA

My siblings and I had a tradition with our mother, where she would pick a day each month to spend with us. We each had our separate days with her. There was also a day she chose for us to spend together as a family, along with our dad. I knew she only organized such a schedule because we were all too busy that we sometimes never saw them for an entire week, even when they slept at home. It was a way to keep in touch with all the members of the family so that no love would be lost. Our parents were the type who valued the intimacy of family and relationships. They made it a point to be involved in mine and Kai's lives, as well as in the lives of our older twin brothers, Remi and Karis. No matter what, at least five days a month were spent with their children. Dad just spent time with us whenever he was available. The occasions were quite rare, but he did. When he was free, if he wasn't sleeping or with his children, he was doing things I wouldn't want to think about with our mom.

Mom studied civil engineering and art at university and later took a course in psychology. There was nothing that went past her, and she always had a way of getting us to pour our hearts out to her. Dad was just dad. He was jovial, yet strict when he had to be. My mom always said that it was his stern and jovial demeanor that attracted her. Dad was easy to talk to as well. He was just always busy. We never had a reason to hide anything from them. They were very supportive of whatever our decisions were, as long as we weren't on a path of destruction, and it was forbidden to stray from the family business. No matter the profession we chose to venture into, we still had to have a stake in the family business. That was why we were all groomed for it as soon as we hit puberty.

When I told them that I wanted to start my jewelry line at fifteen, all they had to say was that I should make time for the family business and all other responsibilities. I had had a little experience from engaging in the family business since I was twelve, but it had still been so draining. My parents literally helped me with everything. I had wanted to give up many times, but my father would be damned if he stood by and watched me give up on something I had already started and was so passionate about. He had helped my older brothers establish theirs when they were around the same age and was determined to make sure I was no different. He made sure I flew through the challenges. I had to learn business management on the job while they taught me the theory of it on the side. It shortly became one of the best jewellery brands in the States and was steadily expanding. My family name and my already established fame had a lot to do with the fast growth. I had plans to expand to bags, shoes, and hopefully clothes, but in due time. Savannah had already established herself in makeup and undergarments, so I had no interest in venturing into those.

My older brothers had already been way ahead with their businesses and that of the families. Kai decided to stick to selling his paintings and investing in other businesses, which were managed by his trusted stockbroker, so he did not have it as hard as I did. He mostly invested in promising start-ups, helped them expand when needed, and enjoyed the profits.

I knew that I was one of the lucky few who had wealthy but understanding parents who made time for their children, and I appreciated it.

It was my day to spend with Mom. We decided to do dinner since it was a school day. As soon as Kai and I had gotten home, I went straight to my room, did my homework, and changed into something more appropriate before heading to Binghamton University to meet her. She was an Engineering Professor there. It baffled me that she decided to be a lecturer, even when she had multibillion-dollar businesses to run, but she had explained that one of her passions in life was to teach.

I picked out a dark blue loose romper that showed a little cleavage and wore black sandal heels to match. I tied my light brown hair into a tight ponytail and rang the chauffeur to pick me up. There was a little traffic jam on the way, but I was still quite early when I got to Binghamton.

After sending my mom a quick text that I had arrived, I decided to wait for her in the cozy café. I quickly added that I was in the coffee shop and found a seat close to the window so that she could easily spot me. I would be damned if I had to walk to her office and back again.

I didn't drink coffee, but I loved the scent of it.

The café was a little busy, but it wasn't noisy.

While waiting, I texted the twins, checked on any pending tasks that I had at work and smoked a stick of cigarette. Although the KAASPA Crew were best friends, Kai and Savannah were closer, and I was closer to Andrew and Pierce. When Aaron had been alive, he had been closer to Savannah and Kai.

"Hello, good evening. What may I serve you?" I heard a rich baritone voice ask.

I looked up to see a tall, dark-skinned guy with friendly, beautiful, piercing grey eyes and a friendly smile. He was biracial. He had deep dimples in both cheeks. He wore a clean white shirt and had on a black apron tied at his waist. He looked like he was a college student. His eyes widened slightly when he recognized me. I always got such reactions.

"Nothing," I responded and went back to my phone.

"We have some delicious scones..."

It was like people hardly ever understood English anymore. I snapped, "I believe 'nothing' means nothing."

His smile faltered. "Sorry, I thought you wouldn't mind trying our scones. They are remarkable." His smile was back again.

"Well..." I looked at his name tag. "Jason, I'll have you know that if I wanted scones, I definitely wouldn't get them... here." Azalea Diamond ate in luxury, not in campus cafés. "And definitely not some nobody's scones."

His smile immediately disappeared, and a hurt expression replaced it. He ground his teeth, clearly annoyed, and said, "And I'll have you know that not everything eaten with gold crockery and bought with diamonds is divine."

I laughed at the exaggeration of that statement. "Well, you have to have a taste of my life before you can come to such a conclusion. Don't you?" I responded. "You are far from even a taste." I scanned his outfit and his low-grade wristwatch. I didn't even care that he was getting angrier by the second. I raised my eyebrow and smirked. "Shouldn't you get back to work? Your petty tips won't just appear in your pockets."

His reaction was to stare at me with stony eyes. He sucked in his lips and sighed heavily.

Just then, my mom appeared at the entrance and waved. I grinned at her and stood up. He also waved to her, and I frowned.

"Professor Diamond is your mom?" He looked surprised.

I was the spitting image of Brigida Diamond. "Mm, that's not news. Everyone knows"

"Contrary to what you might think, I don't spend my time googling you or your friends."

"Oh, maybe you should. I'm much more important than your beloved scones." I jeered, this time with an amused smile. I turned off my cigarette in the ashtray and dropped it in.

The hurt flashed once more, and he crossed his arms. His eyes turned darker. "You know, you should learn a thing or two about humility from your mom. She's a much better person than you are." He sneered.

I laughed once more, and just to spite him, I took out two 100-dollar bills, walked closer to him, and dropped them in his front pocket. "Thank you for the shit conversation." I scoffed and walked out.
