It was Mason. Anyone could have recognized the white-haired male, even on this pitch-black night. Yet he wasn't alone.

Now, (Y/n) realized why the footsteps had sounded so strange. The boy was dragging a familiar girl behind him. He held her by her chestnut hair, ignoring the gentle sobbing that was emitted by the girl.

Mason threw her to the ground, stepping on one of her arms to keep her still. She yelped in pain as his boot crushed her appendage.

"M-Mason, stop", (Y/n) said, her lips numb with shock. She shivered, suddenly aware of the night's chill. She could not tear her eyes away from Hannah's helpless form, her tear-stained face. "Let her go!"

He said nothing but continued to put pressure on the girl's arm. A crack sounded as one of her bones gave way. She shrieked.

"STOP!" (Y/n) made as if to rush forward, but was stopped by the wicked sharp knife that the boy produced.

The male crouched down, observing the injured girl on the ground.

"Remember that time you left me, (Y/n)?" He questioned softly, not looking at her. "When you jumped out of that window to get away... the first time?" He giggled.

She slowly nodded, forgetting that he wasn't looking.

"Well, that really hurt my feelings, y'know, and I promised myself from that moment on to watch over you every night." Now he made eye contact with her. "Every night. Do you know how tired I am?"

She shook her head, at a loss for words.

"Very, very tired. But, I had to stay awake. I couldn't just go to sleep with the knowledge that someone might take you from me or... that you might leave me." He put his head down again. "And then, just as I thought my efforts were for nothing, that you were finally going to be safe and stay put, you sneak out again. Through the window, again."

He looked at her, smiling wide, but his watering eyes told a different story.

"Isn't that funny? The window-" He broke off, chuckling and shaking his head. When he had regained his composure, he continued, "So, on what I thought was my last night standing guard over you, my last sleepless night, you're up there" -he pointed to demonstrate- "climbing down with some bedsheets tied together. And I'm up in a tree watching, thinking, 'There she goes again.'"

He paused for a moment, examining Hannah once more.

"I was almost too exhausted to move, but then I thought, 'I can't let my darling get away that easily. I need her voice in my life. I need her music.' So I guessed where you were headed, beat you to the gate, found this bitch here, and waited nearby. You have no idea how hard it was to keep her quiet, I'll give her that." He laughed bitterly while glaring down at the terrified girl beneath him.

"Why didn't you show yourself sooner?" Was the only thing (Y/n) could think to say.

He considered for a moment. "I liked how the moonlight looked on your face. I guess you could say that I was... enamored."

This wasn't anything like the Mason she had known, the quiet, reserved boy who loved music. He was long gone. The strain on his sanity had finally succeeded in breaking his mind.

She was brought back to the situation by the white-haired boy's sigh.

"Well, now that we're out, I might as well move you to a better location." He spun the knife in his hand, watching the blade twirl. It stopped with its dangerous end pointed toward Hannah. He smiled gently.

"No witnesses, right?"

Hannah stared at him with wide eyes. She was frozen, though she wouldn't have been able to move, anyway. (Y/n) realized what Mason meant and felt terror run through her as well.
