(L/n) (Y/n) brought her fist down on her alarm clock, the monotonous beeping getting on her last nerve. 7 am and already on edge.

She buried her face in her pillow, wondering if anyone would bother to check whether she was awake or not. Ten minutes passed, and the girl listened intently for any sign of life outside her door. She sighed and sat up. Nothing.

Well.

She stared into space for a few seconds, contemplating the day ahead. It should prove to be a very tedious one.

Now moving and fully awake, (Y/n) went about her morning routine, brushing her teeth, doing her hair, picking an outfit, etcetera.

She came downstairs to find her house dark and silent. Opening the fridge, she glanced around for something edible to serve as her breakfast, but found nothing, save for a carton of milk and a dented apple on its side.

Guess I'll pick up some groceries after school...

For now, she took the apple out and examined it closely for bugs or other signs of decay before biting cautiously into it. It would suffice.

Upstairs, she took a quick detour to peek into her mother's bedroom before collecting her backpack from her room.

Other than the lump under the bedsheets slowly rising up and down, there were no signs of life in the dark, cavern-like space.

Confirming that her mother was indeed still alive, she resumed her task and in under ten minutes found herself waiting for the bus in the warm, end-of-August air. She checked her phone. 8:10 am.

Great the dumbass driving the bus is late.

The bus pulled up five minutes later and she rushed onto it, ignoring the creepy stare the driver gave her. She hustled to the back of the bus and sat down in an empty row. She immediately stood up in disgust, as she realized she had sat on a lump of chewing gum attached to the seat. It explained why the row was empty.

She rolled her eyes in annoyance and started to pick the gum off her pants.

"HEY, YOU! WE'RE MOVING, NOW SIT DOWN!"

(Y/n) looked toward the screaming bus driver, then reluctantly sat down, keeping a suspicious eye on the wad of gum next to her at all times.

****

(Y/n) rushed toward the entrance of the school, paying no attention to the other kids screwing around outside. That is until a soccer ball was kicked her way. A boy with red hair jogged up to her, rubbing the back of his neck and smiling.

"Hehe, my bad! Mind passing it back...?"

The girl obliged, nudging the ball with her foot back toward the redhead, then began walking off to her homeroom.

"Hey, uh, wait", he called out, sending the ball back to the other high schoolers he'd previously been playing with and catching up to (Y/n). "I'm a new student here! Name's Tobias, what's yours?"

"Uh... (Y/n)", she replied without stopping.

"Nice to meet you, (Y/n)! What room are you headed to? Maybe we can go there together!" He spouted all this as he jogged backward in front of (Y/n).

"105."

"Me too!! Isn't this exciting! I get to hang out with a really cute girl!" He grinned and winked at her.

"Hold up. Just cause we share the same homeroom doesn't necessarily mean we're gonna hang out."

"Oh, I guess..." His smile turned upside down.

(Y/n) took the opportunity to beat him to room 105. She turned into the classroom and took a seat in the back corner, closest to the window. The redhead was thankfully stopped by the teacher before he had a chance to follow her.

(Y/n) was zoned out no less than two minutes later. She stared out of the window at nothing in particular. Only when someone cleared their throat did she look up to find a boy with flame-red hair standing over her triumphantly. He gestured to the seat next to her.

"Teacher said I'm supposed to sit here", he smirked.

She rolled her eyes at his childishness. Tobias took the seat next to her, paused, then scooted it a few more inches closer to (Y/n). This action did not go unnoticed by the latter, and she side-eyed him apprehensively. He gazed innocently at her.

Returning to the window, she imagined that it was still summer.

What would I do today? Hmmm... Go to the beach. My toes in the sand, the breeze blowing my hair around me, and the waves crashing in frothy, white foam against the shore. What I wouldn't give for it to be July again...

She was interrupted in her fantasizing by a tap on her shoulder. She turned questioningly.

"You seem happy", Tobias observed.

"...is that all", (Y/n) asked after a moment's pause, somewhat annoyed at the disturbance.

"I just saw you smiling and wanted to know what you were thinking about."

"Well, since you asked, I was thinking about not being here."

"Awwww, but then you never would have met me", he said cheekily.

"Your point?"

"Ouch"

Their homeroom teacher took that moment to stand up and announce a new student. Tobias smiled at (Y/n) and whispered, "Wish me luck~"

He went to the front and began introducing himself, all the while his eyes were locked on (Y/n)'s face. When finished he made his way back to their table and 'accidentally' brushed his shoulder against (Y/n)'s as he sat down. She didn't notice.

****

Before (Y/n) could leave room 105 and the annoying redhead behind, someone grabbed her hand. She turned to see none other than the man himself. Tobias smiled and tilted his head slightly.

"Hey, uh, you wanna come to sit with me and my friends at lunch?"

"Friends? There are more of you?"

"Yup! O-or we don't have to sit with them... it could be just the two of us... like a date~"

"Yeah, nope. See ya around!" She bolted down the hall, slowing to a walk when she was sure she had lost Tobias in the wave of people rushing to the second period.

I do not want to deal with him any more than I have to. He seems nice, I guess, just flirty and touchy, too.
