[danielle]
I grab onto Jonas' hand and try to pull him along with me. I want to run away-like I always try to do. I try to find somewhere safe.
"Yo, Mute! Wait up!" The same loud boomy voice yells. Laughter following his statement.
"Dani? What's going on?" Jonas asks. It only takes me seconds to realize the nickname Jonas has given me.
I don't respond, pulling him by the collar of his shirt. Our footsteps are echo throughout the halls as I pull us to the end of a random hallway. Out of breath, I don't realize it's already too late--the basketball team followed us the entire time.
"Hey Mute, why don't you talk to us? Mute? Hey, Mute? Once you tell us to go away we will." The muscular group of guys laugh. "Oh yeah, you can't, because you're just a stupid, dumb mute."
I now notice that the loud voice is captain of the basketball team, William Cooper.
I back into the wall, trying to get as far away as I can from William and his posse.
"Is this your new friend?" William asks, "Danielle doesn't need friends." William says stepping closer to Jonas. "She chose that when she decided not to speak. It's not normal, and someone who isn't normal doesn't deserve friends in my book."
"In your book? What's your book about? Dumbass jocks who don't know common decency?" Jonas says moving closer to William.
I push Jonas back and step closer to William. I give Jonas a death glare.
I definatly don't want my new friend to be beaten to a pulp.
Today is the day, I think. Today is the day that I step up to the bullies. Amy might make William do her dirty work, but not today. I finally feel as though I have a friend, and I'm not going to let him go. Not yet
"Aw, little Danielle is finally sticking up to us," William pushes me back into the wall, "how cute."
Jonas tries to intervene by pushing William back, "Back off man."
Both men are face to face, their noses almost touching. Jonas is a few inches shorter than William, but what are you going to expect, William is on the basketball team for Christ's sake. With the tension quickly building, I try to think of a way to stop this confrontation.
"Why?" William asks. His question is meant to rhetorical, but Jonas replies anyway.
"Because she doesn't deserve it," Jonas whispers, looking towards me.
"Then maybe you do."
