"Okay Danielle, let me see your arm," the same female doctor says.
I learned her name after my mother asked her a question. Her name is Alice Jenkins. Her colleagues call her Dr. Jenkins, but she advises her patients to call her Dr. Alice or Alice (if they want). Preferably, I call her Alice.
I move my casted arm over to her, and she inspects my cast and upper arm.
"Looks good," Alice says, smiling, "I'm going to give you a sling for when your cast comes off in a few weeks, okay? Wear the sling for two or three weeks after that, and it should heal perfectly."
I smile back at her, my teeth being displayed brightly.
"I'll schedule a few appointments with your mother to make sure everything is going smoothly, but I don't think there'll be a problem," Alice says. She looks to my mother, and they begin conversing.
I feel the all too familiar warm feeling on my hand, and I look towards the source. Jonas' hand grips mine. I squeeze his hand gently, signaling that I'm fine.
"You okay?" he asks. I nod. "We'll get out of here and watch movies at your house, okay? I already asked your mother and she agreed. So no worries."
I smile excitedly at Jonas.
"Ready to go Danielle?" my mother asks.
I nod again, standing up. Jonas wraps his arm around my waist, steadying me. We all wave goodbye to Alice as we walk out the door, then out of the hospital itself.
My mother, Jonas, and I make our way towards my mom's car. Jonas opens the passenger-side door for me, and buckles me up.
"I'm going to be in the car behind you, so I'll be at your house right after you," he replies. I nod, and he kisses my cheek as my mother steps into the driver's-side. Jonas closes my door and walks to the black Jeep parked beside us. Mother starts the engine and backs out of the parking spot. I see Jonas backing out as well before we drive away from the hospital building.
"How are you feeling?" Mom asks.
I sign, good.
"It's nice to see that Jonas is taking care of you, Danielle," she pauses. My head snaps to her direction. "I see the way he looks at you- with love and protective instinct. He looks at you like your father looked at me." Her voice gets quieter, all the memories of her and my father together making her sad. "He loves you Danielle."
I know, I sign.
We continue on our way towards our house, the country radio station playing in the background.
When we actually pull into the driveway, Jonas' black Jeep pulls in right behind us. When our car stops, Jonas steps out and makes his way to my side. I unbuckle my seat belt, and Jonas opens my door for me, like before. I turn sideways, my feet dangling out of the car. Jonas takes my good hand, helping me out of the vehicle. When I'm on my feet, he wraps his arm around me again, helping me inside.
My mother watches us with a smile.
She opens the front door for us, then getting out of the way as Jonas leads me inside. He helps me up the stairs, my weak legs not giving me enough stability.
Once in my bedroom, Jonas shuts the door with his foot and leads me to my bed.
"Are you tired? Do you want to sleep?" he asks.
I shake my head, no. Tapping my hand against the comforter, I signal Jonas to sit down beside me. I grab my pack of sticky notes and a pen from my bedside table.
