I stare at the text Jonas sent me.
Did his aunt and uncle really want to meet me?
Was this going to be considered a date?
I've never been on an actual date.
I type my answer and send it to him.
me: Okay. See you then.
jonas: : )
I smile at his text and close out of the message app. I sit my phone down on my bed and run down the stairs to find my mom. She's sitting in the living room, watching episodes of Master Chef on the Food Network. I grab a pack of sticky notes and my pen from my backpack. I sit beside Mom on the couch and write a note for her.
Can I go to Jonas' aunt and uncle's house next Friday and have dinner with them? He said they want to meet me, I write.
"Sure. What time? Do you need a ride?" she asks.
I write another note for her.
6 o'clock. And no, Jonas is going to pick me up.
"Okay, do you want to go shopping for a dress or something?" Mom questions.
I think about her question for a minute, then I reply.
No, I think I have a casual dress, or a cute skirt in my closet somewhere.
"Okay, but if you change your mind, just write me," she laughs, "but don't forget that you have therapy that day after school. So, you won't have that much time to get ready ."
Crap. I completely forgot that I have therapy that Friday.
A year after Dad's death, my mother didn't know what was going on with me when I became mute. She thought that maybe it might have been trauma, so she sent me to Dr. Merrick's office. She was recommended to Mom by a co-worker of her's. Apparently, her co-worker's daughter had depression and was suicidal. 2 years later, after visiting Dr. Merrick's office regularly, she was happy and didn't self harm anymore. She now lives with her boyfriend in New York with a high-paying job and their 2 dogs.
So after the surprising results, I now have go to Dr. Merrick two Friday's out of the month. And next Friday, happens to be one of them.
I run back up the stairs to my bedroom. It's Saturday, and I don't have any plans. I only have one friend (Jonas), so any human interaction is out of the question.
I decide to have a Disney movie marathon and pop some popcorn.
After taking putting the DVD for The Aristocats into the DVD player, the previews quickly start playing. I go downstairs, placing a bag of popcorn into the microwave. I wait for it to ding, and when it does, I put the popcorn in a bowl and make my way back upstairs.
Sitting down on my bed, I watch the last two previews, the menu popping up soon after. I take my remote and press the play button. The movie starts, and I get lost in the plot and adorable cat characters.
