Hannah concludes her night with a few infrequent fortunes her meagre acting skills managed to hustle. She's made enough money to leave a pep in her step as she makes her way down the familiar cracked sidewalk.
The street is quiet on her way back to the craphole of an apartment she calls home. The revelry of the boardwalk has been lost behind the twisting and winding turns of her regular route.
Her skull earrings slap against her cheeks. The necklace around her throat sways with every gust of the slight breeze, mercifully cooling the sweltering night to a more manageable temperature.
She crosses a silent street with a blinking red stoplight and jumps over a pile of trash left strewn on the road.
Hannah slows her pace, observing the lights of the entertainment district a few blocks over, beckoning stars in the dark, promising the seediest and best night of her life. Maybe the only night if she were to take a wrong turn. It's a tempting daydream.
There's only one long stretch of sidewalk left until she's home. Walking past red-bricked buildings and businesses shuttered for the night. The light from a 24-hour convenience store on the corner stands out among the dimly lit streetlights.
Her apartment is around a bend, only a few buildings down, and next to a coin laundromat.
It's not the best neighbourhood. She stays on her guard. People loiter in the streets. Living zombies, ruined by whatever vice they'd let overtake them, wandering, looking for yesterday.
