The distant sounds of gulls and the softly whooshing water of the pier are lost behind the constant clicking of the windshield wipers, moving back and forth, clearing raindroplets from the glass.
The idle car's headlights illuminate the slickened asphalt. The beams of light cut through shadows not far away, revealing the outline of a warehouse with rusted siding and the number seven painted in white on the chained doors.
The time on the car's console reveals, in red, that it's nine forty.
Twenty more minutes.
Kane, who's been quiet for the last hour, mostly spending his time texting on his phone with flurries of his fingers, suddenly sits forward and turns the key in the ignition. The headlights cut off, and the windshield wipers stop mid-swish.
The whirr of the car dies, and darkness settles over the vehicle. Kane's voice is firm but hushed: "Are you going to tell me who that guy was you were talking about?"
"No." Hannah shifts and flattens her back against the passenger door.
"Tell me—"
"No. I don't owe you anything."
Kane snorts. The moon casts an eerie glow over the pier beyond the windshield and brightens the vehicle's interior. "I was going to say, tell me, and I could help you." He crosses his arms, the leather of his jacket scrunching, and looks out the rain-sprinkled window where his shoulder rests. "But, whatever, fuck off."
