"He'd never let you," Reid whispers.
Kane's chest has a swelling of pride at the tangible trust in his abilities that's burning bright in Reid's steely gaze. It's true that if he's still breathing, he wouldn't allow it, but fuck, none of Kane's gusto is going to matter if he's so far gone that he doesn't remember his own name. It's pretty clear he's no match while sitting in this damn chair.
Gabriel laughs darkly. "I guarantee he'll see it my way." He doesn't look away from Reid and misses Kane's hateful glare and teeth set in a snarl. "But, in truth, I don't wish for it to become ugly. Contrary to whatever lies you've concocted in your head, your well-being has always been my priority, not your suffering. I need you to tell me how you knew about the symbol. It's for your safety, Reid."
Past whatever haze from the medication is still lulling his head and twitching the fingers of the limp hand in Gabriel's tight grasp, Reid's thankfully aware of the danger he's been in since Gabriel's fangs made an appearance. He never lets his voice rise above a careful whisper: "I'm not a child; you don't own me anymore. Tell me what you're hiding, and I'll tell you what you want to know. If not, go back to Fawnhill and fuck off."
Kane can't bask in his foolish delight in hearing those two words come from Reid's mouth because his heart begins beating so rapidly he can feel it in his throat.
The suffocating tension rises.
Gabriel remains silent and stares down at Reid with an intense glare that says he's coming to terms with the undeniable fact that Reid is never going to tell him shit.
