Lying in the motel bedroom with the blankets under her chin, in silky pyjamas with dancing monkeys and floating bananas bought from a mall kiosk, she blinks at the ceiling. Kane had left to retrieve Reid, and Hannah couldn't help but laugh, even with her dismal mood, because it's almost as if Kane is picking up their troublesome little brother from a friend.
He'd texted, but apparently Reid is being difficult and not answering. Well, Kane had said acting 'like an asshole', but Hannah's begun to define Reid's spikes of mirth as difficult. No longer annoying, because, beneath the roguish exterior, he's a cute, broken thing.
She's begun to feel protective over her new brother, or maybe that's Kane's knightly attitude rubbing off on her.
She doesn't know how she'll tell Kane what she learned from Valrus, or even if she should, because Valrus could have been lying. He's done it before. He's gone. So maybe what he revealed should die with him. Isn't Kane better off not knowing he's actually not human? Or that he was created by magic for the sole purpose of defeating Valrus?
Kane felt real. He feels real. That's what matters. There's a future to look forward to, and that's what she wishes to dwell on.
She's smiling when she closes her eyes, letting sleep take her.
Hannah thought she'd fallen asleep, drifting, but then she finds herself wide-eyed and blinking into the shadows. The dark fabric of the motel's blinds has been pulled closed along their rod. A sudden crack of lightning has Hannah's gaze snapping towards the window.
