Ship:Renhyuck
Genre:Romance
Angst/Fluff
Renjun and Donghyuck had been best friends since they were kids. They did everything together - played video games, explored the town, and told each other their secrets. They were inseparable.
But as they grew older, things started to change. Donghyuck started developing a crush on Mark, the resident bad boy of their high school. He would go on and on about him, talking about his leather jacket and his motorcycle and how he was so cool.
Renjun, on the other hand, had always had feelings for Donghyuck. He didn't know how to tell him, afraid that it would ruin their friendship. So he kept his feelings to himself, watching from a distance as Donghyuck pined after Mark.
One day, Donghyuck finally worked up the courage to ask Mark out. To Renjun's surprise, Mark said yes. Donghyuck was over the moon about it, talking nonstop about how he was going on a date with Mark.
Renjun tried to be happy for Donghyuck, but he felt a pang of jealousy in his heart. He knew that Donghyuck would never see him as anything more than a friend, while Mark got to be with the person Donghyuck was in love with.
Donghyuck became consumed with his relationship with Mark, leaving Renjun out more and more. They stopped hanging out like they used to, and Renjun felt like he was losing his best friend.
One day, Renjun couldn't take it anymore. He confronted Donghyuck, telling him how he felt left out and neglected.
"Donghyuck, I don't understand what happened between us," Renjun said. "I feel like ever since you started dating Mark, you don't have any time for me anymore."
Donghyuck looked guilty. "I'm sorry, Renjun. I didn't mean to ignore you. I just got caught up in this whole thing with Mark."
Renjun sighed. "I get that, but it hurts to feel like I'm not important to you anymore."
Donghyuck looked at him, really looked at him, and he saw the hurt in Renjun's eyes. It was then that he realized what he had been missing all this time - his best friend, someone who had been there for him through everything.
"I'm sorry, Renjun," Donghyuck said, putting his arm around him. "You're right. I've been a terrible friend. Can we make it up and go to prom together?"
Renjun's heart skipped a beat. He had always wanted to ask Donghyuck to prom, but he never had the courage to do so.
"I would like that," Renjun said, smiling.
The night of prom arrived, and Renjun and Donghyuck looked amazing in their suits. They danced and laughed and had a great time.
As the night went on, Renjun realized that he was falling even more in love with Donghyuck. He couldn't help but think about what it would be like to actually be with him, to hold his hand and to kiss him.
And then, out of nowhere, Donghyuck leaned in and kissed him. It was a soft and gentle kiss, but it felt like everything Renjun had ever wanted.
"Donghyuck, I can't do this," Renjun said, pulling away.
Donghyuck looked at him, confused and hurt. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, I can't be with you like this," Renjun said, looking away. "I've had feelings for you for a long time, but I know that I can't compete with Mark. I know that I'll always be second best to him."
Donghyuck looked at him, his eyes filled with sadness. "Renjun, I had no idea. I never meant to hurt you."
"I know, Donghyuck. And I don't blame you," Renjun said, putting a hand on his shoulder. "But this...us...it's just not meant to be."
Donghyuck looked at him, a tear rolling down his cheek. "I understand. I just wish that things could have been different."
And with that, the night was over. Donghyuck left the prom alone and didn't speak to anyone for weeks.
But eventually, Renjun found him again. He went over to Donghyuck's house and knocked on the door. When Donghyuck answered, Renjun pulled him into a tight embrace.
"I know it's hard, Donghyuck," Renjun whispered. "But I'm here for you. I always will be."
And then, slowly, they leaned in and kissed. It was bittersweet - a goodbye to what could have been, and a hello to a new beginning.
From that day on, Renjun and Donghyuck were still best friends, but they never talked about the kiss or their feelings for each other again. They were content with the love they had, even if it wasn't the love they truly wanted.
