Flies buzzed around the truly disturbing scene. The pungent odor of death filled their nostrils, each soldier unsettled by the result of a genocide that lay before their very eyes.
"No, please." Sergeant Caricias fell to his knees. His head hung low, almost in defeat.
Y/n's heart sunk. Seeing all those corpses, that used to be someone. Someone with hobbies and goals, someone that had family and friends waiting for them at home. Gone.
"Father what happened here?" Azulin kept his gaze on the bloody scene.
"The Unicorn, my children." Father strolled through the campsite, "The beast has no mercy. Take a good look at what we're fighting."
Y/n refused to look any longer. The point was clear. A deep knot in her stomach brought forth a wave of nausea and pure fear.
"Look at it." Azulin whispered, his warm breath tickling her earlobe, "This is War, this is our enemy. This is what I'm going to end real soon."
He spoke with certainty. And oh, how he loved to see her in so much fear. She's so vulnerable like this.
Y/n said nothing, she simply trembled at his words.
Her throat was squeezed shut as the mere sight of these mangled corpses disturbed her beyond belief.
"And what are we fighting? Tell us." Coco's stern tone caught everyone by surprise, "We haven't even seen a damn Unicorn yet. This is a slaughterhouse!"
"You have to have faith." Father turned.
"But what madness is this War?! Look around you Father. Having faith means not wanting to know the truth. This makes no sense." Coco's voice shook, palms now trembling, "Let's go home!"
Panda cried into his hands. Both Gordi and Sonrisas were overcome by a sharp sense of shock.
"Oh my God." The Sergeant held a bloody skull in his palm, tears rolling down his cheeks, "We're all going to die!"
As this played out, Y/n felt her chest constrict.
"The Sergeant is right." Panda wept, "We're going to die!"
Now the entire crew felt any slimmer of hope fade away. They were going to die here; none of them were going home.
Despite his ever growing pride, even Azulin himself felt a tiny pang of fear strike his dull heart.
Gordi moved an arm around his brother's shoulder. Though Azulin would never voiced his worries, Gordi knew. So he held him in a tender, loving embrace and said nothing.
'We're going to die here.' Those very words rang constantly in Y/n's head. Her breathing was shaky, a dull ache lingering in her chest. She was in shock.
That was, until Blacky began to cry out for help, "Achuchones isn't doing well. He can't take anymore!"
There lay Achuchones, thrashing and howling in agony. The infection had spread farther up his leg. His skin was throbbing, toes rotting and clearly beyond repair.
There was no other option but to..
Coco neared the commotion, machete clutched between his fingers.
He didn't want to do it. No, but he had to.
