'Once he falls asleep for his nap, we can all laugh at that,' Isa chuckled in — seemingly — everyone but Costin's mind.

Six Months After Being Hired

"[Y/N]?" Lady Daniela called as she entered the room that I was about to leave. "Have you finished in this room?"

"I just did, my lady," I signed with a smile. "Did you need something?"

Lady Daniela nodded and signed. "Follow me, there's something I wish to show you."

I walked with Lady Daniela through the hall, noticing how she kept looking over at me. 'Did I do something wrong?' When we were in a more secluded area of the castle, the lady slowed down — causing me to slow down too. She took a deep breath before I felt her hand brush against mine, causing my heart to skip a beat. 'Is this an excuse to try and hold my hand?' Her fingers cautiously tangled with mine, her hand flinching away from mine when my fingers twitched.

'Why can I never figure her out?' I glanced at her and moved my hands together in front of me, wringing my hands nervously. 'Does she like me? Is this just another game for her?' When I glanced again, Lady Daniela seemed to be glaring at the floor, and her jaw clenched in frustration. I waited until we made three more turns before letting my arms fall back into place, silently hoping she would try again.

My eyes landed on a door when we slowed down, confusion setting in until she opened it. Blankets and bedsheets scattered the floor and furniture, a pile of books rested in the center of the room, and the only light came from the fireplace. Lady Daniela motioned inside before she fidgeted with her gloves, glancing at anything that wasn't me.

"I uhm, I saw- read it, in a book..." Lady Daniela flinched when she stuttered. "I thought you might like it."

"This is..." My signing stopped as I stepped inside, a smile spreading as I whispered. "Beautiful."

"The snacks are nearly ready — if you want to get comfortable, I'll go get them."

"Why did you do all of this? Is it because everyone falls for you in time? Trying to make sure-?"

Lady Daniela shook her head and fidgeted in place. "I like you — a-as a friend — and I wanted to see you happy, that's all."

Before I could sign to her, Lady Daniela swarmed away and shut the door, leaving me alone. With a low sigh, I sat before the fireplace and grabbed a book, wrapping myself in a blanket while waiting on Lady Daniela to return. I opened the book and began reading it, smiling when I noticed it was a love story about a mute girl. 'Well, at least there's one story...'

My fingers tightened on the book as I read it, a spark of hope filling me at the thought of the story having a happy ending. I glanced up from the book when I heard the door open, sending the lady a small smile when she walked to me. Lady Daniela returned my smile until she reached my side, removing the snacks from the cart before sitting next to me.

"Uh, this is why Isa told you not to worry about making sweets for lunch," Lady Daniela giggled. "I wanted to prepare some snacks without having you accidentally ruin the surprise."

I smiled and took a bowl from the lady. "Homemade ice cream? I didn't think you'd want to make something like this."

"I asked Isa to — I wanted to, but with what our weaknesses are.."

"Thank you," I signed, giggling at her nervous behavior. "I love it, but what did you make for yourself?"

"Something warm," She smiled and grabbed another plate. "Want to try it?"

"...Are you sure?"

"Of course, I'm sure," Lady Daniela giggled, using her fork to cut a piece of the lava cake. "Open wide."

I fought back my smile as she moved closer, holding the fork and waiting for me to follow her orders. When my lips parted, she cupped my jaw and eased the fork into my mouth, waiting for me to bite down and pull back. Lady Daniela brushed a thumb over the corner of my mouth as I ate the piece, her eyes locking with mine until we both looked away.

Present

"I remember that," Isa chuckled, bouncing Costin on their knee as he yawned and curled into them. "Did you like the ice cream?"

"...I don't remember," I muttered, sending a glance to Daniela. "We started talking about the novels after that — how the moment seemed like the dates in the books."

"...It was a date."

"What?"

"And the gods say I'm dense," Isa sighed and laughed. "It was an unofficial date. Dani wanted it to be one, but she wasn't sure if you would, so she said she wanted to show you what those scenes in the books look like. How did you not piece it together?"

I tilted my head and thought back to that night before facing Daniela. "Was that a date?"

Daniela blinked while sending me a sheepish smile. "Depends, will you think it's adorable that I was so nervous?"

"I found it adorable then, and I'll find it adorable now."

The body in Isa's arms shifted, the tiny arm rubbing at his eyes. "Stowy."

"Did you like [Y/N]'s story?" Cassandra asked Costin, making the boy shift — as if trying to lay on Isa like a bed.

"S'eepy," He whispered while nodding his head to her question.

"[Y/N]... Do you want to try and put him to sleep? Or would you rather wait for another day?"

I shifted in my seat and nodded, reaching for the kid as Cassandra picked him up. Once she carried him over, Costin leaned down until I could take him, his arms wrapping around my neck after I had him. He let me position him as he nuzzled into me, his arms loosely hanging around my neck. I rubbed circles on his back until soft breathing could be heard, making me shift him slightly to see his sleeping form.

'Fast,' I giggled internally before turning my attention to Isa. Their red eyes stayed on Costin until they noticed I was watching them, the red disappearing from them. 'Paternal instinct — even they can't escape it.' Isa cleared their throat and waved their hand, making Cassandra cover her mouth to hold back a giggle.

"Our son called you tiny."
