It's been about six months since you and Shawn broke up. You moved away to go to college and Shawn moved to L.A. to pursue his music career, and you told him you didn't want to do it long distance.
Now it's been a long time since you've even talked to him, and you've moved back home because the college wasn't really working for you. You've been trying to see how Shawn's doing by asking his friends, but now it's like even they don't want to talk to you, so you're just trying to move on.
You were sitting out by the pool flipping through a magazine when you see a picture of Shawn with a caption that says, "Up and coming Shawn Mendes is stealing hearts of girls all over the world."
Rolling your eyes, you shut the magazine and sigh.
Then you realize something.
You reach for the magazine and flip back to the page with Shawn on it, noticing that he was wearing dark sunglasses in the picture.
You pull your phone out from under your towel and find Shawn's twitter link, clicking on media. You notice that in every recent picture, he was wearing dark sunglasses, too. Not just in the ones where he was outside, but also in coffee shops, onstage, during photoshoots, in hotels, everywhere.
You go inside your house and upstairs to your room, where you open up your side-table drawer and flip through pictures of you and Shawn from when you were together. He wasn't wearing sunglasses in any of them.
You scroll through your phone until you find Cameron's number, clicking on it and raising the phone to your ear.
"Hello?" he answers tiredly, like he'd just woke up.
"Cameron, hi, it's Y/N."
"Oh, hey Y/N. What's up?"
"Can I ask you a weird question?" you bite your lip.
".. Okay? What's going on?"
"Why is Shawn always wearing dark sunglasses?"
There was a long pause on the other end of the line, before Cameron suppresses a sigh.
"Because, Y/N," he speaks slowly, "his eyes are always red and puffy from crying so much. He misses you. He's just.. you broke him, Y/N."
His words hang in the air for a while and thinking of Shawn in so much pain causes your eyes to well up with tears.
"Okay, well, thanks Cam," you manage. "I have to go."
"Wait, Y/N?"
"What?"
"He's in town this week. He's staying at Carter's. I think that maybe you should go visit him." His voice was really low and quiet.
"Okay, Cameron, I'll think about it. Bye."
"Bye," he says in return, before the line went dead.
After spending all day bumming around, you eventually decide to go to Carter's. You have to face Shawn one day, and maybe moving on doesn't even have to happen.
You ring the doorbell, and Carter swings it open a moment later.
"Y/N, what's up? You never come by anymore," he greets you with a smile.
"Yeah, well, I actually came to see Shawn. Cameron told me he was staying here."
Carter's smile dissolves into a cold, hard glare, but you couldn't really take him seriously.
"Yeah, he's here. Why do you want to see him?"
You sigh. "I want to talk to him, that's all. I feel really bad about everything. I want to see how he's feeling about.. you know, everything that's happened."
Just as Carter was about to say something, you hear a voice from behind him.
"Who's here?" the voice booms. You flinch upon realizing it was Shawn. Your stomach suddenly twists itself into a knot, your throat halting.
Carter turns to face him, opening the door wider so you could see him. He was wearing a dark red t-shirt and black sweatpants, sunglasses hanging over his eyes. His koko lips part slightly at the sight of you, shaky hands scaling behind his back.
He scrutinizes you from head to toe, digging his teeth into his bottom lip and refusing to move.
You awkwardly wave. Your gut was doing cartwheels inside, and it was a chore to keep both feet planted on the ground.
"What are you doing here?" he chokes, not quite used to your presence yet.
"I came to see you, Shawn."
He looks down at his feet and fiddles with his fingers, mumbling something about how you should go home.
You step closer to him and force yourself to reach out and cup his chin, giving him no choice but to avert his eyes to you. Slowly, you grab either sides of the sunglasses on his face and pull them off, revealing his tear-stained skin and red eyes.
"You've been crying," you whisper. "Why?"
"Because," he says after a long pause, his voice shaky. "Because everything is just so painful right now. Without you. Just everything."
You search for his eyes and entwine your fingers with his.
"Baby boy," you coo. "Soon the fog will clear up."
He laughs lightly, immediately trying to cover it up, but you definitely saw it.
"You laughed!" you clap your hands together, which only causes him to shake his head and laugh once again.
"I love you so much, Y/N," he admits, placing his hands on the small of your back as he pulls you closer to him.
"I love you, too."
Shawn surely presses his thin lips softly to yours, gently holding the back of your head with his hand. It felt like a dream to be back in his arms, like missing pieces were falling back into place all at once.
"You guys are gross," Carter says from the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest.
You pull away and look over towards him, laughing.
"No, I don't want to stop," Shawn says to you, pulling you right back in.
