You hold onto one end of the string of lights, which was unplugged, newly bought. You allow your fellow newly-wed to hold onto the other end, which he continues to unwrap.
"You're not doing it right," you mumble, laughing at his attempt to untangle the lights on the floor with his bare feet.
"Your bossiness is not appreciated," he looks up, smiling. "It shouldn't even be this complicated to untangle a thing of lights."
"You're making it complicated."
"Shut up."
You laugh, pulling the chord towards you and walking over to the tree. You outstretch your arms and place your end on a branch at the bottom of the tree, on the side that was facing the wall.
"Okay, just keep feeding me more, don't stop," you instruct.
"I feel like you have said that before, haven't you, Y/N?" he smirks.
You turn to face him, rolling your eyes. "I'm going to seriously need you to stop talking."
"Sorry."
"It's fine, just give me more."
"Ahaha," he points. "You've said that before too."
You ignore him, slowly wrapping the lights around the tree while laughing to yourself. Shawn went into the attic to get a box of ornaments, and you continue to fully enclose the tree so that it's completely illuminated when plugged in.
"You know, we have a flaw in our plan," you say, biting your lip.
Shawn comes up from behind you, his hand on your back, looking at the tree with you. "What's that?"
"Well," you say, "granted, you're tall. But neither of us are tall enough to put the star on top."
"And we don't have a ladder," he adds. "Whoops."
"What are we gonna do?" You ask, glancing at the star, which was sitting on top of one of the light boxes. The tree was much to massive for either of you to reach.
He thinks for a moment.
"Actually," he says, "I have an idea. Grab the star."
You hesitantly lean down to pick it up, making a wild decision to trust him. He was giving you that look, like he was up to something.
"Come here," he motions you towards him as he walks close to the tree.
You slowly walk over to him, laughing while holding the star in your hands.
"Stand in front of me," he orders.
"Shawn, what are you--"
Suddenly, his palms were resting on your hips, fingers wrapping around your waist as he lifts you up over his head. You scream, kicking your legs and begging for him to put you down. His strength took you by so much surprise.
"Put it on top!" he giggles, hardly able to control himself. "Though I must admit, I like this position."
"Sta-ha-ha-hap."
With your feet dangling, your ass in your husband's face, you use both hands to carefully place the star on the very top branch. When it's steady, you yell, "got it!" and Shawn swiftly lowers you to the ground.
But, it didn't work out well, because of the way that gravity works.
He ended up completely dropping you to the floor, your knees bending and sending you flat on the ground, stomach to the ceiling. It was hard to act hurt when you couldn't stop laughing.
Shawn takes the world's largest gasp, crouching down on the floor and placing his hand on the small of your back.
"Oh my god, Y/N," he rubs his hands over your backside, checking for bruises while laughing at the situation. "Oh my god, Bug, I'm sorry."
"I'm fine," you laugh along with him. "That was really funny, though."
"You're so cute," he smiles, pulling you up so that you were sitting almost on his lap. He wraps his arms around you, pulling you into his chest so that you could take in his musky scent.
"I have to tell you a secret," you say after staying in that position for a while.
"Hmm?"
You thought about just blurting it out, getting it over with. But instead, you scramble to your feet, taking a moment to smile down at him. "Follow me, I'll show you."
He anxiously follows you down the hallway and into the bathroom connected to your bedroom, which still excited you to see, that you were actually married and actually shared a bedroom and a bathroom with someone. Even though it happened months ago, it still awed you every time you saw.
"Why are we going into the bathroom?" he asks, confused.
"Well," you grin, "you know that... um... thing we discussed?"
"What thing?"
"You know, the thing. You said that you wanted to be a-- "
"Oh my fu.ck you're kidding, you're kidding. You're not.. are you?? Y/N, don't you dare fu.cking joke about this, I will divorce you. I will divorce you. You're kidding."
You chuckle, walking over to where you had left all of the tests, in the sink. One of them was negative, but you took it four times, throwing the negative one away and leaving the rest there for him to see.
He stands behind you, looking down at the sink in utter shock as he rubs up and down your arms, his hands landing on your waist again. He kissed your forehead, his eyes never leaving the tests before you watch in the mirror as they slowly close, his eyelids exposed as he sways you back at forth slowly.
"We're going to be parents," he says softly.
"Mm-hmm," you nod. "At this time next year, you might even be lifting up a much smaller Mendes family member to put that star on the tree."
"I just got the most adorable image in my head," he steps backwards, looking up to the ceiling, then eyeing your stomach.
He drops to his knees, placing his hands on it and rubbing around. You'd never seen him smile so big when he says, "Wanna come out now, baby Mendes? I promise I won't drop you like I dropped Mommy."
