Mei Bridge (Poem)

There is a boy
With eyes brighter than a million stars
A grin so big and brilliant, it was nearly perceptible from miles away

Slight crevices in his milky skin beside his brown eyes, never to wane or discolor

Every day I slowed my car along the far edge of the Mei Bridge
to converse with him, where he awaited
And I think that he's beautiful

There is a boy
Whom soon became a victim of theft
Strength and willpower was drawn from him,
little by little, each passing day
But his smile lingered on
Never to wane or discolor

Every day I slowed my car along the far edge of the Mei Bridge
to converse with him, where he awaited
And I think that he's beautiful

There is a boy
Of which the stars and the moon aligned for
But there were instances, I cannot disregard
In which the rest of his world knew him not
over and under looked him

But I was beyond beholden,
that the boy whom I slowed my car along the far edge of the Mei Bridge
to converse with, where he awaited
was no stranger to me

And I think that he is beautiful.

Even so, there came a time that
it was all too much
for his small, engulfed mind
to prosper

And like a ship,
he allowed all the negativity that the cruel world offered him--
to get inside of him,
and that's what caused him to sink

Submerged below the surface
Unable to engage
To let the light in his eyes stay vibrant
and never wane,
like I once thought they would

He had once awaited there
and there he will continue to await
Until the only token left of him
is the memory he left behind
for the world to prosper,
those who still could do so

He told his mother he was sorry,
He told his father he at last understands

And he told the girl
who every day slowed her car
along the far edge of the Mei Bridge
to converse with him, where he awaited

That he thinks that she is beautiful.
