You step out of the elevator of your apartment building and into the narrow, carpeted hallway, skimming each door slowly until you find yours-- the apartment you share with your long-term boyfriend, Shawn.

You fish your keys out of your purse and swing open the door, shutting it behind you with your foot.

The apartment was small, since only the two of you lived here. There was a queen-sized bed that sat perched in the corner, no bedroom needed-- the duvet disheveled and unmade, but neither of you cared enough to fix it up properly. Other than that, there was a living room, and a small, packed-in kitchen, and a single bathroom that you shared as well.

You walk towards the kitchen counter where your home phone sat perched against the backsplash, and click the button to replay your messages.

As you flip through the mail, you mindlessly listen to the robot-phone spokeslady explain the same repeated prerecord.

As soon as the first message came on, you raise your eyebrows and begin to pay attention to the words the voice on the other line was saying, which made you bite your lip and suppress a giggle.

"Hey, dude," Andrew Gertler's voice blares from the speaker in his natural energetic, booming tone. "I texted you a hilarious photo and you never read the message. Just calling to let you know to check your damn phone, bro. The picture is of us from two years ago that popped up on my facebook memory timeline, and you look absolutely laughable."

You shake your head, snickering quietly to yourself. Andrew was one of those people that chuckled through his whole sentence, which made it seem even funnier than it actually was.

"And by the way, I remember that day perfectly because it was exactly a year ago, April Fools Day, and you were all nervous because we had just dared you to ask Y/N out on a date."

You freeze.

You crisp envelopes in your hands suddenly slip from your grasp, falling to the floor and scattering around your feet. With your eyes wide, your fingers shaky, you click the rewind button over and over to replay that last part, to be sure you heard it right.

Dared you? Dared?

You weren't even sure he said dared, if you'd heard him right. He could've very easily said cared. Or scared? Glared? Shared? Flared? Squared? What else rhymes with dared? Haired?

"What the-- " you mumble under your breath as you replay the message at least six times again, each time in more disbelief than the last.

Being his girlfriend was all an April Fools joke?

When was he planning to tell me this? Has he already told me and I just didn't hear him right? Was I supposed to laugh?

You nearly regurgitate just thinking about it, your head suddenly light and dizzy at the thought.

"Happy one year anniversary, sweetie! Funny story, I was supposed to only be your boyfriend on April first to see how you react! Isn't that just peachy and hilarious? How about some cake, now?"

Before you could say or do anything, the bathroom door opens, and Shawn, clad in an inky black t-shirt and grey jeans, steps out into the living room.

"Oh, hey," he beams. "I thought I heard you come home. If you wanna change we can go out for dinner at around six?"

You glance over at him from where you lean over the counter, and he makes a face.

" ..Uh, are you okay, cuddlebug?" he asks, his voice portraying sudden concern.

You squeeze your eyes shut and slowly mutter, "When were you going to tell me I was a dare?"

"What?" he furrows his eyebrows immediately. "What are you talking about?"

"You know exactly what I'm talking about, Shawn. Don't play dumb with me. When were you going to tell me that it was Andrew who dared you to ask me on a date?"

His confused look remains still across his face, which only pissed you off even more. Suddenly, a smirk plays across his lips, and he slowly walks towards you.

Your mouth slowly drops at the sight of his smile, his approaching figure, and you shake your head in disbelief.

You roll your eyes, not being able to stop your laughter. "Please don't tell me this is some stupid-ass prank?"

He hovers over you before saying softly, "happy April Fools Day, my angel."

You were still laughing when he plants a long, still kiss on your forehead, stroking your hair gently with his fingers.
