You were having a birthday party, just a little get-together at your favorite restaurant with some friends. You and Shawn have been official for a few months now, but you figured he wouldn't want to come to a boring dinner with a bunch of girls from your school. So you didn't invite him, but you did tell him about it, so it wouldn't be like it was a big secret, which it's not.

A few days before the "party", your best friend approached you in school and told you that she invited Shawn.

"What?" You say, giving her a glare.

"I can't believe you didn't invite him in the first place! You guys are totally deeply in love," She argues, trying to turn it around with a compliment.

"I didn't invite him because I figured he wouldn't want to come," You tell her.

She laughs. "From what he said today, I'd have to disagree."

"What? What did he say?"

"He said he was waiting for an invite and didn't know if or when it was going to happen! I can't believe you told him about it, but didn't invite him!"

She wasn't mad, at all. You were the only one actually mad. She was trying to prove her point that you were being ridiculous.

"I wanted to celebrate my birthday with Shawn privately. So it would be special," You say quietly.

"Oh," She says, a wave of realization crossing her face. "I'm sorry, Y/N. I didn't think about that."

You release a small smile. "It's okay. I guess it wouldn't be that bad if he came."

So he did come. And it went really well. He sat by you in the curved booth and had conversations with all of your friends, but had his arm around your shoulder the whole time to let everyone know you were his.

He shared his food with you, and kissed you after you blew out the candles on the cake one of your friends brought, which was cute. You couldn't help but imagine what it would be like if he didn't end up attending.

And just as everything was going great, the worst thing that could happen, happened.

Shawn's ex walked into the restaurant.

Even just looking at her, you cringe. You and H/N used to be best friends when you were little, and your birthdays were even on the same day, but when you started crushing on Shawn and she started dating him, knowing that you liked him, things ended.

Even though Shawn wouldn't know you if it weren't for H/N, you still hate her.

"H/N! You made it!" Shawn says happily, waving her over to the table.

"Hey, Shawn," She says, smiling as she slides in the booth across from one of your other friends.

"You invited her?" You whisper to Shawn.

He looks at you, searching your eyes. "Yes. Was I not supposed to?" He murmurs back.

"Y/N, oh my god, it's so great to finally talk to you. When Shawn told me it was for your birthday, I totally had to come, of course," H/N nudges your shoulder.

You force a smile. "Yeah, it's cool to see you too."

Shawn must've felt the tension between you because he sighs and says, "Okay, what line did I cross?"

The whole table got silent.

"What do you mean, babe?" You ask.

"You're all weird that I invited H/N and she's being nice and awkward and you're not trying hard to be fake-nice back. I thought you guys were friends?"
