Oakley stared at her phone confused.
Her brother was in prison, serving a ten-year sentence with no parole. He was only halfway through it.
So why did she have a missed call from his cell phone?
"I'm going over to see Beth," Kayce walked into the living room from the bedroom, finishing putting his belt on. "I'll send Tate down here."
"Okay," Oakley stared at her phone still.
"Everything okay?" Kayce asked, walking up beside her.
"Uh... I don't know," Oakley looked up at him from the bar stool she sat on. "My brother called me."
"What?" Kayce asked.
"I have a missed call from him," Oakley looked back down at her phone.
"But he's..." Kayce leaned down to look at the screen.
"In prison," Oakley nodded her head. "Yeah."
"Did he get out?" Kayce looked over at her.
"My parents would have said something," Oakley shook her head.
"Maybe someone else got his number?" Kayce offered. "Or it was spam by mistake."
"Maybe," Oakley frowned.
"You okay?" Kayce wrapped his arm around her shoulder, noticing Oakley wasn't looking any better.
"Just weird," Oakley shrugged. "I haven't talked to him in a long time..."
Oakley sighed. "The last time I did there was a glass between us and it didn't end very well."
"I have access to this type of stuff," Kayce sighed, sitting down on the stool next to Oakley. "Want me to look into it?"
"Could he find out you did?" Oakley asked.
"Criminals always have a way," Kayce went to roll his eyes but stopped. "Oaks..."
"He's not a criminal," Oakley leaned away from Kayce.
"I didn't mean that," Kayce frowned. "I'm sorry, it just slipped out because,"
"Because you think he's like everyone else in there?" Oakley hissed. "He took the fall."
Oakley stood up from her stool.
"He was innocent," You picked up her breakfast plate and walked over to the sink. "He was trying to be a good friend but then his best friend decided to let him take the fall."
"I didn't know," Kayce watched her.
"No, you didn't," Oakley threw her plate in the sink and it shattered. "Because you weren't there."
It was silent in the room. Oakley felt her blood pressure start to sink as she breathed in and out. Cash was a good big brother to her, always had been. And in a lot of cases, Cash had been Oakley's only friend. She rested her hands on the sink, her back to Kayce.
"I asked if they could tell if you ran the case because Cash doesn't know about us," Oakley looked over her shoulder at Kayce. "Last time he ever said anything about you was when he told me he would kill you for what you did to me."
Kayce looked at her, his shoulders sinking.
"I'd at least like to have the option of him hearing it from me that we're together again," Oakley leaned back against the sink and crossed her arms.
"I'll leave this then to you," Kayce stood up and walked over to the front door, grabbing his hat. He looked back at Oakley. "I'll send Tate down. Have a nice day, baby."
