John and Oakey had gotten Kayce back to the main house after Oakley's phone call. Right now, Kayce was sitting next to the fire because even though he'd deny it, he was freezing from spending so much time out in the cold the past few days. Oakley had made some hot tea and walked back into the living room with a mug for Kayce. His fingers brushed her went he took the drink from her. John was going over some papers on the table that used to be Oakley's desk. The only sound between all of them was the crackling of the wood. Oakley sat down next to Kayce, the fire warming her back.
"You need to call Monica," Oakley said softly.
"She'll just yell and probably tell me what a shitty father I am," Kayce sighed into his mug. "And then say I can't see Tate for a while."
"That's bullshit," Oakley snapped, narrowing her eyes at Kayce. "You're human, and Tate will understand. He's a smart kid."
"It's not Tate who makes the rules," Kayce shrugged.
"She can't hold him over you forever," Oakley sighed. "You can't tell me she doesn't have her own demons."
"She blames me for every bad thing that happened to us," Kayce leaned his elbows on his knees. "She's not wrong for most of 'em."
"There are two people in a marriage," Oakley frowned. "She might not have liked what you did, this place, or your family, but she stayed in it just like you did. She didn't try and fix it, or meet in the middle, she tried to break you from your family, from here. And I'm not saying this place doesn't have its..."
Oakley looked over and saw John was watching you too.
"...it's challenges," Oakley shifted your eyes back to Kayce. "But she didn't even try and that's what you do in any type of relationship. You try to make it work and sometimes that means you don't get your way."
Kayce didn't say anything to Oakley but took another sip of his tea.
"Do you want to go get Tate?" Oakley asked.
"I always wanna go get Tate," Kayce answered.
"Then let's go get him," Oakley stood up and started to walk out of the room when John chuckled. She stopped near him and stared. "What?"
"Nothing," He shook his head and looked over at Kayec who was standing. "I'd follow her, son."
Oakley waited until she felt Kayce's hand on her back before they both walked out to his truck, climbing inside and heading out to the Reservation. Oakley knew it was almost an hour to get there so she settled into your seat. Kayce had soft music coming from his speakers, one hand on the wheel while the other rested on his console.
"What did you say when Monica asked you for a divorce?" Oakley glanced over at Kayce.
"What do you mean?" He eyed Oakley.
"When she said she wanted a divorce," Oakley crossed your arms. "What did you say back to her?"
Kayce shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "I think I said okay."
"Just okay?" Oakley asked.
"Yeah," Kayce nodded. "I was already done, Oaks. I was tired...and I guess too big of a coward to end it myself so I waited until she did."
"Don't call yourself a coward," Oakley shook her head.
"It was a short conversation," Kayce sighed. "Then we met with a lawyer once, signed papers at another meeting and that was it."
"Not the ending you wanted, I'm sure," Oakley felt bad. Not for their marriage ending, but more so for the fact that it was done long before they decided to end it.
