"Oaks..." Kayce hadn't moved from his spot.
"Don't," Oakey closed her eyes, bringing her fist up to her lips to process what Kayce had just told her.
Her boss was dead? She saw him earlier and was with him all day long today. A million questions flooded Oakley's brain and she felt like she either wanted to scream, cry, or run away. Taking a deep breath she reopened her eyes and saw Kayce watching her closely, almost like she was a deer and he didn't want to spook her.
"Who killed him?" Her voice didn't sound normal to her ears, but Oakley waited.
"I don't know," Kayce said and she knew he was being honest.
"How do you not know? You've been gone," Oakley glanced at her phone screen. "For hours...where did you go?"
"To get rid of his body."
Maybe Oakley didn't need Kayce quite so honest. Her eyes widened at his bluntness.
"To get rid?" Oakley shook her head. Kayce tried to reach out and hold her arms but Oakley wiggled out of his grip. "Tell me what happened."
"I'm trying," He sighed.
"No you're not," Oakley snapped. "You haven't once given me a simple straight answer about what took place. My boss is dead, Kayce? Apparently, that happens here still...and you disappeared for hours and you don't know any more information?"
"Something happened at the house with my father," Kayce argued. "It was Rip who came to get me earlier and make sure you were with me. We helped get rid of the body. That's all I know...I was told to come check on you before I go back up to the main house."
"You were told to come check on me?" Oakley's eyes narrowed.
"No," Kayce ran a hand over his face. "I wanted to check on you."
"I'm fine!" Oakley yelled out in the small cabin. "But what happened to David?"
"I'll find that out when I go up to the main house," Kayce said, keeping his own voice low and calm.
"We," Oakley rolled her eyes, standing up and walking back into Kay'ce bedroom.
"We?"
"Yes, Kayce, we," Oakley slammed the bathroom door behind her and found her clothes folded where she left them. Tugging them on quickly, not looking in the mirror because she couldn't face herself, she opened the door again to see Kayce leaning against the wall. "I'm coming with you."
"I told you to stay here-"
"And look at how that turned out!" Oakley snarled. "You apparently got rid of my boss' fucking dead body!"
She moved over to her boots, pulling them on, and then facing Kayce who now looked angry. Their stare down took a few moments before Oakley walked back into the living room and found her jacket. She watched Kayce walk up and grab his own jacket and hat. They didn't speak as they made their way out the front door and into the dark Montana night.
After walking in silence up to the main house, Oakley could see all the lights on and the sheriff's truck now parked in front. There were two wranglers on the front porch who stood up when they walked into the porch light.
"Kayce," Llyod nodded but he didn't look happy to see Oakley like he usually was. "Miss Dobson, I think Beth is around front if you-"
"Where's John?" Oakley asked. If she wasn't going to get the answers from Kayce she knew she could from John.
"Inside," Lloyd frowned.
Oakley walked up the steps and into the house, following the voices she now hears. John, Rip, and Sherriff Haskell were in the living room and all immediately went quiet when Oakley walked in, Kayce right behind her.
