I leaned against the doorway of the office, watching Clare sleep peacefully with a copy of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' resting open on her chest which rose slowly up and down.
Walking, over silently, to not wake her up, I put the book on the desk and then turned off the light before picking Clare up, bridal style and carrying her out of the office and upstairs to her room, I laid her on her bed and pulled the covers over her.
She made a faint whimper sound, before I realized she had been holding onto my arm.
"Clare, let go," I whispered, hoping that would do the trick... but it was Clare, she did not let go, even in her sleep, she was stubborn!
"Was it really that bad back then?" she mumbled half awake, I knew she was talking about the book, so I sat down on the edge of the bed as her blue eyes opened barley at all, but just enough so I could see her beautiful blue pools of eyes she had.
"And at times, worse," I nodded.
"What was it like for wolves?" she asked.
"Well, the 'Usual Disease' in the book did infect packs... even this pack, sadly." I told her.
"Did you... were you racist?" she asked randomly.
"No, my mother raised me to never speak against anyone, unless they give you a reason to," I smiled, which caused her to smile tiredly back.
"You were Atticus, then." She mumbled.
"I wasn't perfect, Clare, I was still hanging around my brother around that time, he... he was more like that newspaper man, Matthew didn't care, so I had to clean up his messes and at times, that made them worse, so I did get blamed for things that I didn't really cause.... At first." I explained, I looked at her, and smiled when she finally loosened her grip, I knew that meant she was finally asleep, I slipped out of her room, closing the door behind me.
I walked back downstairs to see... Matthew.
"Hey, Little brother." He smirked.
In seconds, I had him by the throat and against the nearest wall.
"You shouldn't have come here." I growled.
"Now... Can't we just... forgive and move on? That was years ago!" he managed to say.
"You know why I won't ever forgive what you did." I snapped.
"Even for her sake?" he asked pointing to the ceiling, I knew he meant Clare, I tightened my hold on his throat, till he grabbed onto my arm.
"What does she have anything to do with this?!" I asked harshly.
He whacked my arm, begging to be released, I rolled my eyes and dropped him, he sank to the floor, before clearing his throat and looking up at me.
"I found her... talking to that little twit, Drake. Oddly, he did not make a move to attack, he seemed to just want to talk to her... which, makes me wonder, why aren't you watching her better?" he explained.
"She what?" I said confused, a bit... betrayed.
"Was talking to the same guy that wants your head and her blood... you need a tighter leash for your little mate, brother." He smirked.
"She's not a lapdog!" I snarled,
"Never said she was, it was just a saying, don't get all hostile!" he said putting his hands up.
I groaned rubbing my forehead, before looking back at Matthew, as my eyes narrowed.
"Why am I still talking to you, I should be throwing you in a cage and throwing the key away," I muttered, stepping towards him.
"Hold on, before we go and play lock Matthew up, maybe you'd like to hear my offer," he said raising an eyebrow.
"What offer?"
"The one that means, you could beat the twit and the ex bitch?" he shrugged.
I crossed my arms over my chest.
"Talk, before I change my mind." I said.
"Ok, thanks, lil' bro... now then, you see, I may have a way to help you win, but it takes a little... Big bad Chief Alpha mojo to do it. You challenge Drake to a fight, and if you win, he backs down, but if he wins, he gets to be chief alpha and gets to kill you and do whatever he had plan to do to Clare... it's simple." He explained.
"You always did like to challenge people," I said.
"It's only fun if you're watching, not so much, if you're the one fighting." He shrugged, smirking faintly.
