Lan Sizhui saw as Wei Wuxian walked away briskly, and Hanguang-jun followed after him a few minutes later. He couldn't grasp this too well. Losing someone like this- He knew he lost his family, being the surviving Wen, but this was different.
He watched as Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli argued with one another, Jin Zixuan hanging back, knowing to stay out of this. Where's Jin Ling?
The boy walked past the people, looking up and down for the other boy, but where was he? Soon Lan Sizhui recalled the last time they were together.
"The cherry tree- of course!" he said to himself, quickly walking to where the tree would be. And there he was. It was weird seeing Jin Ling in white, but it wasn't a bad look for him either. His eyes were a beautiful hue of yellow.
The junior tried his best to not startle young Jin, walking up to him as quietly as possible.
"I can hear you- you needn't be so quiet," he said abruptly. He was sitting on that bench that the two sat together on weeks before.
"Oh- I just didn't want to disturb you." Lan Sizhui said.
Jin Ling didn't say much to the other boy but motioned for him to let him know that he could sit down next to him. Lan Sizhui did so in silence. They both were nervous wrecks, but also sad.
"How have you been?" Jin Ling asked. He didn't want Lan Sizhui to ask him something he knew he couldn't respond to. Not with how things are now. He felt the sadness and anger and worry radiate off everyone and he didn't like it- it made him uncomfortable and he didn't know why.
"I've been- the best I could be." The boy turned to the other, who had his arms on his knees, probably in thought.
"I'm sorry for your loss-"
"I'm sorry too..." Lan Sizhui said.
He didn't completely notice how Jin Ling had scooted a bit closer to the older junior disciple. But suddenly he was closer to him now. And his heart began racing. The two had light blushes on their cheeks now, and Jin Ling had awkwardly cleared his throat. Lan Sizhui had tried to look at Jin Ling but saw that the boy had done the same thing, which embarrassed the two as they both looked away, redness creeping on their faces more.
They hadn't spoken since what happened last time with Jin Ling just running off after being kissed by Lan Sizhui. It was embarrassing, and being so close was making his heart race, but- he didn't hate it. He felt some joy from that kiss, but it was all just too sudden for his brain to process before his body did for him.
"I-" Lan Sizhui was looking at the ground now, "I want to apologize for what I did...to you...the- kiss-", he never had admitted it out loud to himself, and doing that made him even redder in the face.
"Oh that- that was um, you don't have to apologize." Jin Ling started fidgeting with his hands now, and occasionally pushing strands of hair behind his ear.
"No, I should, I shouldn't have done that without permission. I should've asked or- wait- well, not that I would've, no- crap- um, I would've, just- okay I'm going to stop now. Please forgive my rudeness." He muttered to himself and berated himself for all of that, but Jin Ling lightly chuckled-
Lan Sizhui now looked at the boy lightly chuckling to himself, he missed that laugh so much-
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't be laughing, it's really not the occasion-"
"It's alright, I think I needed that. I- missed it." Lan Sizhui softly smiled.
"Missed what?" Jin Ling questioned. Fidgeting with his hands again.
"Your laugh, it's- beautiful."
Jin Ling's breathing hitched at this. My laugh?- He was blushing profusely too. "Oh- my uh- my laugh?"
"Haha, yeah. Your laugh." Lan Sizhui felt rather comfortable now, smiling as he inched closer to the boy.
Lan Sizhui had unconsciously placed his hand on Jin Ling's slightly shaky one. Jin Ling, however, immediately noticed this and started to stutter and couldn't have gotten any redder than he was now. Lan Sizhui noticed and quickly pulled his hand away, his ears burning up.
Jin Ling felt warm all over now, "Thanks- that's really nice of you, ha-" He couldn't help but smile a bit. He didn't get this feeling, but something about it made him happy. He wanted to be around Lan Sizhui a lot, but with how far apart the two live, that wasn't going to be easy.
"Hey, Sizhui-" Jin Ling was nervous now, what he was about to propose could either break their friendship. Relationship? Or make it- somehow anyway.
The boy had already been looking at the other, "What is it?"
"I- uh, doyouthinkthatwecouldsendletterstoeachother???" Jin Ling had rapidly sputtered from his mouth. He was looking down at his feet now. God, this is embarrassing. What is wrong with me? And that feeling in his chest grew again-
Lan Sizhui gave him a confused look, but with a sweet smile of understanding, "Yeah of course we could. I'd like that very much."
"And look, I'd understand if you didn't- wait what?" the boy asked, confused.
Lan Sizhui chucked to himself, "I said I'd like that very much. If it means I get to spend more time talking to you, it's worth it." Wait- did I just say that out loud? Oh god oh god oh god oh god oh god oh god whyyyy . Lan Sizhui was very obviously internally dying from his words.
"Oh wow- well- I would love to be able to talk to a friend. You know?"
Lan Sizhui's heart died a little at that. Friend- He couldn't let that show, "Yeah of course. That would be nice."
The two sat in a little bit of silence now, there was some tension though and neither knew how to break it. The cherry blossom's flowers continued falling around them eagerly as the light wind blew them from where they sat on the branches. Everything surrounding them felt suddenly too close and as if they were being watched even if this was a secluded area. Jin Ling finally stood up, offering his hand out to Lan Sizhui.
"Why don't we go on a walk again?" mirroring Lan Sizhui's motions from the weeks prior. It made Lan Sizhui blush and his ears burned too. Lan Sizhui went to stand up, grabbing Jin Ling's hand happily.
"Yeah of co-"
"Jin Ling!" they both turned to where the woman's voice was coming from. They quickly pulled their hands away from each other so as to not look suspicious. Yes, they were young and dumb, but they knew how it all looked. Jin Ling took a few steps away from Lan Sizhui, he didn't want anyone to think anything of this.
However, the boy in white noticed, and his heart sank a bit. The woman happened to be his mother, Jiang Yanli. She walked over to him, "There you are! Oh, hello Lan Sizhui." She courteously bowed to the boy who returned the favor, smiling. Although it was slightly fake.
"I'm sorry if I interrupted anything between you two, but we best get going now." Jiang Yanli bows again to Lan Sizhui, and turns to walk, but once she's far enough Jin Ling turns to Lan Sizhui, who has a bit of a sad look on him.
Jin Ling gets closer and looks at the boy squarely, "I'll- I'm going to write to you, okay?" Lan Sizhui looked at Jin Ling for a bit longer, his eyes were the prettiest color and it made him weak for the other.
Jin Ling's face got red as he blushed more obviously this time and he was compelled to kiss his friend's cheek- he didn't know why he wanted to but he did. The two young disciples said their goodbyes as Jin Ling left with his sect and Lan Sizhui sat down again at the cherry blossom. He couldn't help but smile as he watched the petals fall. He took a breath in and one out.
