I slowly opened the blueprint to the hospital's floor plan before my men.
I'd seen through Aman's plans. I've seen it all. I knew the next move he was going to make.
He always outsmarted me when I went after him. Not this time around. This time I will make him come after me. This time, I will make him dance into my territory and play by my rules.
There's no excuse for failure this time around. Not when my child's life was also on the line. Thanks to Mei who helped me find out. She was one of those extra-talented people, who had gifts. Mei could sense a pregnant woman from looking at her.
When she returned from the hospital after speaking with Curtis, she informed me of the recent development with Curtis. I remember asking her to confirm the information over and over again. Mei was rarely wrong with her predictions but something in me felt unsettled. Somewhat desperate to know the truth.
When she told me, my reaction to it was... I remember I was actually happy. Should I say it was unexpected? I never thought of us having a little one running around. I never thought I'd fall helplessly for this woman. I never thought we would last. My intentions were never heading to the 'till death keeps us apart' vows.
Yet I crossed every boundary with her. Because I loved her.
In that moment, the world I knew broke down and re-aligned again, to the new reality of having this baby with her. Now, I don't care about any of it. My identity, my job, my status. I'm choosing them, and if I'm unable to save them now, I might turn out to be the worst father of all time.
I can't wait for all this to be over, I thought to myself. So I could have her wrapped in my arms again.
Another interesting progression to our plans, the bride was also with child. I have to save them. No matter what.
"Did you confirm the chip's location?" Trent asked.
"Yes, it's on her neck," I said.
After Curtis' disappearance which everyone in this room knew Aman was responsible for. We bet she had an encounter with him. That's why I visited her home, the morning after she went missing. When she threw a fit and refused to speak to me, my suspicion was confirmed. Behind all her anger and tantrum, her expression and eyes reeked of fear.
I saw through her little act and the sudden uptight security in her home.
Our informant gave the information that it was a body-implanted chip. That's where I come in again because I was the only one who could get close enough to her.
Last night was all shade of perfection. I missed my wife, yes, but I also got the opportunity to figure out where on her body the chip was placed. Going back to my memories, I remember how I carefully caressed her, all over, and only when I bit her neck did she flinch in pain, instantly withdrawing.
"The left side." I completed. "The chip in her neck..."
"It's one of a kind, a three-step authentication is needed to decode the chip from the inside." Trent abruptly said while going through his tab.
Mei sighed before speaking, "We don't have that much time. Moreover, how can we get to Curtis? She'll be guarded heavily."
"That's why we're killing two birds with one stone. Three birds actually." I said, taking their attention to the mission's white board. "First, Curtis. Secondly, the family. Thirdly, the bomb."
"Hey, sorry guys I'm lost. How do we know it's a moving bomb again?" My newest recruit, Finn asked.
"It's not a literally moving object. From the history of Aman's people... Let's say they love-love self detonation and sacrifice. Willing to put their lives on the line for the price. The carrier is called the host." Mei explained.
"What if they changed their methods because they know that you know that they know." At that moment, everyone around the table pauses to look at Finn, baffled after his last words.
However, Mei goes ahead and explains to him, "If they're changing methods, the highest I put my money on is that they will be changing the host. Meaning the carrier will be someone that nobody would least expect." She opens her tab. "Now every mature adult given an invitation to the wedding will be protected heavily from each of their homes. No one would actually want to cause an injury for themselves unless..." She shows us her tab. "It's a child."
"You think it's a child?" Finn asked with an astonished look on his face.
Pause, and Ignored.
"So we have to come up with a way to extract this child from the wedding premises." I said.
"When a child is ill, he or she should be taken where?" Mei asked and Finn responded, "A hospital."
"Now we just have to make sure she's taken to the hospital we want." Mei pulls up the location on her tab and drops it on the desk while pointing at it.
"How?" Finn asked.
"That's where I come in." Milton who arrived late for the party appears behind us.
"Glad you could make it." I welcomed him to the table with a handshake.
You might have gotten the hint by now.
Plot twist, Milton, my partner and inside man in the government had been putting on a charade for the purpose of this mission.
Milton was down to earth, loyal, and ready to serve while I, on the other hand, was selfish, headstrong, and a chronic manipulator. I met him years ago at a training facility I infiltrated to execute a mission, but our clashing lines of work and views of the world put us at each other's toes when he began protecting the people I was sent to kill.
My relationship with him was a cat and mouse chase, an underground friendly competition between who protects and who kills. We were never seen together in public because being seen with each other risked the other's job, so we settled in the shadows. Our underground friendship was also why fooling Aman and pretending to be enemies was pretty easy.
Resolving this crisis was also an underground work with the officials who didn't want to publicly taint their status by working with an assassin so Milton had contacted me secretly.
Overall, I was thankful he kept a watchful eye on my wife, just like I instructed him to. Though she did get abducted, he apologized for that and I also apologized for bringing up his divorce case back at Curtis' home.
Now, we're working together, the protector and the killer finally have a common enemy.
"I'll make sure the little girl gets to this hospital. Where the family is being held captive, also because of Seth's treatment." Milton says while drawing the lines on the blueprint. "Then, they'll come after the host and Curtis will be with them."
"We can run the second authentication code when they arrive at the block. Great." Trent includes.
"Hold on, what about the first and third? We haven't even talked about that yet." Finn asks.
"Saddle up. You're playing cop." Mei beams at him.
"Me? What?!"
"It's easy actually. Stop the vehicle as it approaches, and stall them for a bit. Long enough for Trent, who will be hidden in a corner to hack the first code. He just needs to be meters away for it to work." I added while wrapping up the blueprint as the others begin retreating to their various stands.
"The chip will be transmitting some signals and wavelengths, hopefully from it, I can track Aman's location before I run the third authentication," Trent reassures one last time and exits the gathering with Mei.
"Hopefully? So it's a gamble right?" By the time Finn asked the last question, he was the last man standing. "Is anyone even bothered about the third authentication or is it just me?"
