"Would someone explain to me what's going on here?!" Curtis' mother asked in a perplexed tone.
I was adjusting my rumpled coat and tie while giving a cold stare at Milton who was now on the other side of the counter with his hands fixed in his pockets.
"We were having a little chat, weren't we?" Milton gestured at me.
She gave Milton and I a careful glance before speaking again, "Well, Curtis is home."
I didn't waste a second as I took long strides outside the kitchen, eager to see her.
The door opens and like her mother said, Curtis walks in looking elegant and sexy as usual. Her curves, her eyes. Her hair which was usually curly was now straightened and all laid down perfectly. But there was something about her that felt different. Not her looks, her aura. I took the liberty to scan her body too, there wasn't a single scratch on her glowing skin. She halts at the door, stunned to see me and for that brief moment our eyes locked.
In that brief moment, I was reminded how I fell for this woman.
"My dear!" Her mum walked towards her and gave her a long hug. "Welcome home. How was your trip?"
What trip?!
"Fine, Mom. How are you feeling? You good?" She asked her mother while taking her took her coat off.
"I'm okay. My well-being shouldn't bother you right now. You need rest." Her mother said she took Curtis' coat from her.
"Mom, I have been so busy, you can't even imagine. After my flight..."
What flight?!
"...had to go to the event hall. We had to move pillars and tables. My voice is nearly gone. Can I get water?"
"Sure." Her mom exits, heading to the kitchen.
She ushers herself deeper into the room, dropping her bags on the chairs we occupied previously.
"Milton. Oh my goodness." Curtis said then went in for a subtle embrace with him, both totally ignoring my presence. "I'm so sorry I left the other day without informing you. Things just happened so fast. I..."
He grabbed her shoulders in an assuring way, "There's no need to explain. I understand you had work." Then threw an 'I told you so' grin at me.
I flinched at the sight of them. Once again, I could feel my anger ignite with all the acts she was pulling. I'm not buying these lies and BS.
Her mother arrives with water and offers it to her.
"Ah, so much better." Curtis said after taking a glass full.
"Your husband has been waiting for you." Her mother said, cheering me to come closer.
I didn't move and Curtis barely looked back. She barely kept eye contact. I figured she knew she'd give away her lies if she looked at me. So she chose to ignore me.
"He's been here since the previous morning, waiting for you." Her mother completed.
"Mom, I'm tired. I'm going upstairs." She picked up her bags.
"B-but he's..." She walked away, heading for the stairs before her mother completed the sentence.
You aren't escaping this round. I thought to myself as I followed behind her on the stairs.
"Where have you been?" I demanded.
"I owe you no explanations."
I firmly held and spinned her in one swift move to look me in the eyes. She was on a step higher than mine yet my height was tall enough to meet hers. "Of course you do."
