The elevator doors opened, I and Mr. Lannister walked out, with him not giving me a glance. I placed the box of books on the signing table, where Mrs. Manchester would sign the first copies of her book. Down the far end of the room, Mr. Lannister was inspecting for any mistakes. In no time, i would be asked to bring out the books and i wouldn't want to be here to see the shock on their faces when they realized there were no books. The box was filled with old papers from my office, i needed to create a distraction.
I bit my lips, tension eating every bit of me. I texted Susan who i sent out to pick the boxes from the delivery van.
Where are you, i am freaking out.
It took some minutes before i got her reply.
Susan: I'll be there soon.
What do you mean soon,we have just 30 minutes and there's no time.
Susan: I'll get there as fast as i can.
While texting, i saw Martha going towards the box and i quickly closed it up before she saw the content.
"Don't you have more important things to do."
"Likeee." She dragged.
"Like following Mr. Lannister every where he goes because you're his puppet."
She let out a laugh "Don't be jealous now Curtis. Actually, i was confirming if you got the books but, I'm really quite relieved now."
"I'm warning you Martha, if you don't stay out of people's business, you're going to die." Her face turned red in anger as she walked away, towards Mr. Lannister and Mrs. Manchester. She looked like she was reporting an issue to them judging by the way they turned their heads towards me in unison. I bent my head down trying to keep myself busy.
A hand tapped me from behind and i turned to see a security officer "Ma'am, the press is here and they would like to speak to you."
"Well, let them in."
"We can't let them in until we finish inspecting the hall for any bug devices."
"Alright, i will be there in a minute." I said, as i turned briefly towards the end of the hall to see Martha still staring at me. I shook my head and followed the officer. I answered the press quickly and went back into the hall to see the box opened with Mrs. Manchester looking inside. 'Oh no, I'm so dead' I thought.
"I'm so sorry, i tried to..." I said quickly rushing to her side.
"Sorry for what, dear." She questioned.
"I couldn't get the books here on time." I admitted and sighed.
She let out a laugh "but the books are all here, so what are you saying."
"What do you mean," I looked into the box and my office files were now replaced with the books. "Oh," I said, as i laughed nervously and opened my mouth to speak but no actual words came out.
"Come on, lets begin the program." She smiled. "And by the way the hall looks lovely, dear." She said before she walked away and i sighed in relief.
I texted Susan; thank you.
The officials of the high table which included Mrs. Manchester, Mr. Lannister, and some other important personnel which aided the publishing of the book were all seated, the guests were all seated and the program began. I stood in the background making sure everything ran smoothly, as it was my job. After speeches were given, Mrs. Manchester proceeded to signing her books. Refreshments were given, pictures were taken, and the press got to speak to Mrs. Manchester about her book. At 4pm, the event was done and the hall was being cleaned.
I entered my office and fell on my seat, exhausted. I stood for hours and right now, i need some sleep. I shut my eyes closed for a few minutes when i heard a knock on the door "Its Susan." The voice from behind said, while she came in.
"Oh, hey." I said.
"So, the book launch was a success." She said while taking a seat before me "By the way Mrs. Manchester sent her regards." She paused for a moment."You know, sometimes i feel lucky for being able to work with you." Indeed, Susan talks alot.
"Come on, Susan, you don't have to tease me. Today was nearly a disaster." I smiled.
She put on my desk a file "No. I'm being honest here. How you got copies of the books to the hall today, totally stopping Martha's plan was brilliant." She said while spreading her hands in a dramatic way.
I bent my head giving her a 'are you serious look' while looking into the file that was dropped on my desk. "But i thought the books were brought by you."
"Are you kidding me now, i actually arrived with the books when Mrs. Manchester had signed about 50." She confessed as she rolled her eyes.
'this means someone else brought the books. But who' I thought, staring outside my window. Susan cleared her throat, bringing me back to reality. "Right, so what are we working on." I asked, concentrating on the file once more.
She straightened in her seat "We have a job this evening. One of the hotel guests on honeymoon requested for a romantic dinner with his wife. He wanted somewhere secluded, just the two of them. I did ask if he wants to speak with you and plan a dinner that will meet his wife's taste but he said you should surprise him. The only information he dropped about his wife, she's a Japanese woman. Which i find really wierd because how does he expect you to plan a dinner for his wife, that's like asking you to go back in time and be born in Japan, then marry him and know..."
"Okayyyy! You can leave now i will work on it." I said, tired of hearing her ranting. "Come on now," I stood up from my seat ushering her out.
"Curtis, i was just..." She trailed off as i waved my hand showing her the door "Fine!" She groaned, leaving my office while i closed the door.
Finally i could get some work done. I looked into the file and prepared a nice romantic dinner for the couple. I chose a hall with the perfect size. The room was dim lit, the light which shone was from the red candles that were set up in distinctive parts of the room and a beautiful candle stand which was on the table that was wrapped with a light pink sheet, surrounded with two glass chairs.
The room had stars reflecting in the ceiling, making it look like they were under the skies. Before getting to the table, the room had a walkway with two ponds beside it. I designed the walkway with candles to light the path, i also sprayed red petals along the path and placed peony flowers with their sepals to float on the water.
I spoke to the chef to prepare some Japanese food of his choice since i wasn't familiar with them. I thought music would be a good idea so i hired a violinist to play at the background, i wanted the couple to feel in the moment.
I looked around and everything was in place. I sent a concierge to inform the guest that his romantic dinner was ready and at 7pm, the couple came in with the man leading his wife in. From her gasp, i could tell she loved it. Though i was standing in the background and it was hard to see, the couple looked like the ones that checked in this morning. Still, a lot of people check into the hotel so i may be wrong. Suddenly, my phone rang and i silenced it immediately so i don't disturb the couple. I gave the violinist a thumb up and left the room through the back.
