Joseph finally returned home just in the nick of time as the sun was about to disappear from the horizon, thus meeting his parents' requirement. When got home he found his mom and dad talking out in front of their house with his mom getting their horse ready and a small amount of supplies.
Dad: You should consider yourself lucky, Joseph. You just barely made it.
Joseph: But I did make it!
Mom: You know, you should really bring her by the house sometime. I'd cook her up something nice.
Joseph gave his mom and then dad a confused look.
Joseph: What are you talking about?
Dad: Son, we are your parents. You think we thought you were just going out for hours to run around and play by yourself? We know you're seeing some girl.
Joseph shrunk a little as he realized they had him totally figured out and dead to rights. Even as he blushed he denied it still.
Joseph: U-ummm there's no girl...
Guilt was on his face plain as day.
Mom: It's ok, I'm glad you've got someone your age to be close with. You really should introduce us though. I'd love to get to know her.
The two parents stopped teasing the white haired boy as his mom went inside to grab a few last things before their hunting trip. By now their horse had its saddle and a few satchels hanging off of it holding things like maps and cumpasses. As well as things like towels and water, not to dry off with or to drink but to clean their clothes of blood. They didn't want to risk being spotted with blood soaked clothes. Before his mother came back Joseph's dad gave him a hug and a forehead kiss.
Dad: Promise me you'll be careful out, Joseph. Now I know you've trained hard and you're ready and all that. But still, this is your first time going out on your own. So please please please promise me you'll be careful.
Joseph could see his dad was suppressing his worry.
Joseph: I promise dad I'll be careful. And I'll come home safe.
They both hugged each other tight as his mother came out and finished securing the saddle with the stuff they would need. His mom got on, his father boosted him up a little and Joseph got on and gripped his mother so he wouldn't fall off. They both said goodbye and then his mother snapped the reins and the two got going towards wall Maria.

The journey there was long, but they had each other to talk tactics too, most of it was pretty standard though. Joseph's mother just really wanted to make sure he remembered everything and was fully ready. The hunt itself was gonna last two days, since ghouls could go for about two months total without food. However at the one month mark they would begin to experience hunger and that meant headaches, mental imparity, and a desire for food so great and blinding they would even feed on those closest to them. The longer they went without food the worse the effects of hunger would be. So when he and his mom went out once a month to eat they gorged themselves and ate as much as their stomachs would allow to avoid that hunger.
By the time they reached their usual spot on wall Maria that was unguarded and unmanned it was the dead of night, they were about 25 Kilometers from Shiganshina. And that was perfect since the titans didn't move during the night and they were most concentrated near there, meaning they would be easy pickings and a dime a dozen. They hitched their horse to a tree and got off. Joseph was ready to explode with excitement as he took off his eye patch and stuffed it in his back pocket. His mom handed him a small pouch that he strapped to his though using some buckles. Inside the pouch was a map and compass so he could find his way back to the walls even if he lost his sense of direction.
