Slowly approaching Rod Reiss' Titan stumping with his gigantic hands echoed throughout the whole Orvud District like a sluggish heartbeat every few seconds. As it continued moving towards the densely populated District, the flocks of birds escaped from the nearest forests, flying away from the looming danger, destroying all living on its path and behind a trail of devastation. It dragged its immense body across the ground with a singular purpose – to annihilate as many as possible. Unburdened by only elaborate plans he developed for years, his only goal now was mass destruction, standing as the most powerful Titan the Walls had witnessed in a century, surpassing even the Colossal Titan in sheer magnitude.
With every passing second, it drew nearer to Joseph, Historia, his friends and the people of the districts. Seeing its gigantic figure from the distance, Joseph was getting increasingly uneasy, not sure whether it was panic speaking to him or the merciless scorching Sun. He knew there was no running away, they had to stop Rod Reiss in Orvud, or he would destroy Wall Sina, killing tens of thousands in the process. So Scouts had only one option: stand and fight. Two things that stopped him from getting consumed by fear were his dear Historia, who helped others with explosives as he already envisioned her in the snow-white wedding dress, and his mother's Kagune, secured by the steel belt-like cable. These aided him to remain intact acting as little glimmer of hope.
Hange and Erwin had come up with the plan which was risky at best. It involves stuffing Reiss Titan with as many explosives as possible, praying its nape will be blown by it. To do that, Joseph and Levi's squads were tasked to gather all the gunpowder that could be found in the District. After gathering enough, they began to pack it in barrels and boxes. Using a lift to ascend the Wall, they finally returned to the rest of the Scouts.
Nanaba: Hey boss?
Joseph turned around and saw his squad mate carrying a big barrel of gunpowder on her shoulders. Everyone else was doing the same thing, hauling boxes or rolling barrels on the ground and putting them all in one pack. Joseph used his abilities to speed up the process as he carried a heavy rope in his arms and used his Kagune to hold barrels.
Nanaba: You think this will work?
Joseph: It should work. It better...otherwise-
Historia: It will work.
The Queen-to-be cast her gaze upon her future husband, as unyielding as the ultrahard steel. Joseph could see in her eyes that she was determined enough and had no reservations about ending her father, and she was prepared to land a final strike against him if necessary.
Jean: Let's hope so, otherwise how else are we going- WOAH!
As Jean was looking at his friends, stumbled over a divot on the top of the Wall, falling forward. Luckily, his ginger-haired comrade was near him, and grabbed him by his shoulder, catching him before he collapsed and saving him from face-planting. She caught him and helped him steady himself to his feet once again.
Petra: You alright?
Jean: Yeah, thanks, come on let's get back to it.
At this, Jean resumed his draining task, and with Petra's help, they started moving barrels together, their hands briefly brushing against each other, before both carried ponderous gunpowder-filled containers to the others. The remainder of their journey was brief, as they joined others in assembling massive nets and placing explosives on them. Amidst the vigorous knot-tying, the weak wind started blowing on them and the putrid smell incoming from the monstrous Titan entered everyone's nostrils, making them turn their faces. All except Joseph, who saw it as a smell not only of a disgusting creature but of his future meal too. However, there was still internal anxiety within him - as Rod Reiss wanted to get the Founding Titan, he might be the one who could be eaten instead.
