In the main massive area of the underground Chapel, all of the Anti-Personnel Squad soldiers present held their breaths in anxious anticipation, breathing heavy air from the tension. A deafening silence enveloped them, broken only by the occasional racking of guns and the strained sounds of cable lines. The atmosphere was charged, making it difficult for some to even draw a breath. The only scents in the air were that of the crystal walls and pillars, along with the pungent notes of their sweat dripping from their foreheads. Their fingers gripped metallic triggers tightly and the accelerated thumping trembled their chests.
Each of them was poised for the arrival of the Scouts' offense to retrieve their friends, ready to execute Captain Ackerman's ruthless order to shoot them down at the first sight of them, with their leader moving slowly to the main room with a grin in anticipation of the battle. Some of them were almost pleading internally for the fighting to begin, desperate to release the pent-up anticipation that hung heavy in the air by pulling their triggers against their enemy, even though most of them were scared due to the surprise factor of the Scouts' attack.
Yet their wait persisted as the seconds ticked away. The impending battle, one that could shape the fate not only of the people of Walls but also beyond them, hung like a sword above them. The focus of every soldier inside the Chapel was fixed sternly on the wooden entrance door, a flimsy barrier separating them from their destiny.
On the other side of that door, their destiny awaited eagerly.
Levi: Go!
At one instance, Nanaba and Gelgar burst through the door, sending wooden splinters flying. Both had fire in their eyes as Jean and Connie shoved the gunpowder-filled barrels down the stairs. All of them began to run out as Sasha crouched down one knee and loosed a flaming arrow, striking dead and igniting a fire. In an instant, the gunpowder and oil-laden barrels exploded in a hale of black smoke that crept into every corner of the immediate vicinity like the shadow of the Grim Reaper.
Levi flew through it all like a harbinger of death, emerging from the smoke unscathed. His sharp eyes instantaneously scanned through the niveous cavern.
Levi: 24...29...32...35. 35 enemies! They're gathered behind the pillars! Continue with the plan!
In the next instance, Armin and Sasha entered the cave through the remnants of the entrance and instantly fired off rounds of green smoke, enveloping the area to aid in their concealment from enemies' guns. Kenny's lieutenant gave the order to spread out and eliminate any enemy at their sight, filling the air with the mechanical humming noises of advanced ODM gear activated and sudden hisses of gas thrusting them towards the Scouts.
Nanaba and Gelgar emerged from the billowing smoke, each covering one flank side by side, as a surge of bloodlust and anger coursed through their veins like a powerful drug. Propelling at a low height, evading most of the soldiers' detection, until they pinpointed their first target—a bald soldier zipping between the pillars to the edge of the cavern. Despite the cacophony of grappling cables and slashing sounds of blades, accompanied by a symphony of gunshots in the distance ringing through their ears, their eyesight remained fixed on their target.
Gelgar sent the hooks to the closest pillar and zipped in front of the MP catching him off guard. As he prepared to lift his guns, the edge of his ears detected a highly distinct sound of the gas hiss rapidly approaching him. As the MP moved his pupils to his side, a momentary gaze only met with Nanaba as her ODM gear hooks latched onto the pillar behind him. With the buckshot gun aimed directly at her face.
At that instant, Nanaba exploited the crystal cavern's ambient light. The walls seemed to radiate their own glow, piercing through the inky black and green smoke. Using this, Nanaba deftly angled her blade, reflecting the cave's light right into the MP's eyes, making him wince. His body shuddered from the blindness as he had lost sight of his target or anything in general. Firing his guns blindly, he could only hope his shots didn't miss. As the haze dissipated in his eyes, he gasped from terror at what he saw next.
