Joseph Nelarna was a boy whose existence wasn't supposed to be possible. Ghouls were supposedly extinct for a long time, yet he and his ghoul mother and human father lived a peaceful but isolated life in Wall Rose.

Joseph: What in the world??? There's no way that was a dream. Right? It felt way too real......Frieda......I......
Joseph still didn't entirely know what to make of what happened. But he decided that his earlier thought to tail her was the correct one. He needed details and information about her to satisfy his new found interest, fear, and curiosity in her. But for now he was hunting and he still had more than enough room left for another titan or two. So he decided to lay out a plan for Frieda later and get back to hunting.
He leapt down from his branch and resumed his hunt. Eventually he found a 10 meter class titan, since it was daylight it was up and moving around which meant Joseph was in for a fight. Whilst he was a little scared he was nowhere near panicked, he had fought much bigger titans before. So he got his nails ready and closed in on the massive titan. After he was spotted the titan tried routinely to swat him out of the aim. Thanks to his heightened senses that came from going on hunting trips with his mom since literally birth, Joseph was able to predict and dodge the titan very well.
After having a little fun Joseph got behind the titan and used a tree as a springboard and launched himself in. He sliced the titans nape with his nails and killed it. As it tumbled to the ground and began to dissolve into steam. Joseph wasted no time and began to gorge himself on as much titan as he could eat before it fully dissolved. This was the disadvantage of hunting during the day, there were more titans and thus more food, but you had to kill them first.
After about 5 minutes there was no more meat, only a skeleton. Joseph sighed disappointed, he knew he could still get another titan or two in his belly before he should head back. So he went off once again. But as he jumped from tree to tree an unbelievable smell entered nose. It was one he had smelled about a billion times, but never beyond the walls. It was faint but it was definitely there.
Joseph: Why do I smell a person? How would there even be a person out here??
Joseph had smelled, previously found, and even eaten the dead bodies of Scouts he found before, but this scent was moving and it was alive. Emotions of curiosity and fear for the person's safety spread through him as he bolted over as quickly as he could. Eventually he arrived at a small clearing in the forest. In the middle there was a tree with a small hollowing in the middle of it. He also spotted a 6 meter titan that was hiding behind a tree.
Everything about this was strange.
Joseph: Why is it hiding like that? Is it an abnormal? And where's that person? I know they're close. But that's not good since there are clearly also titans in this area.
Just then Joseph's jaw dropped as he watched from a tree branch a Scout with dark and short hair appear from the treeline. She had no ODM gear, only having her Scout cloak and uniform, she was very clearly scared and afraid of where she was. She was also vigorously scribbling down notes on a small notebook.

Joseph watched as she rounded a tree and came face to face with the 5 meter titan that was hiding behind it. This girl was named Ilse Langer, she was a Scout whose ODM had broken and her horse had run away. The expedition she had been a part of had been slaughtered and she was the only one left outside the walls since she couldn't retreat. She was terrified but tried to have a brave face, but she was unbearably scared. But she still made an attempt to detail her time outside the walls trapped in her notebook.
