The seaplane's engines buzzed steadily, carrying the weight of their exhaustion as it cut through the sky. After a near-miraculous landing on a makeshift dirt strip beside the half-destroyed fort, they had just enough fuel for the journey home. Now, as the aircraft soared over the shifting landscape, the cabin filled with a blend of tension and tentative relief.
The plane's frame vibrated, sending a constant hum through the metal benches and into their bodies. The monotonous noise clashed with the chaotic thoughts swirling in their minds. The vibrations seemed to hammer the reality of their fragile situation directly into their bones.
Outside, the landscape blurred past, highlighting the distance they had covered and the uncertainty of their return. The cabin was thick with the sharp, oily scent of fuel and metal, mingling with the residual aroma of dried sweat from their recent ordeal.
Those who managed to cling to some mental clarity were visibly on edge. Their hands gripped their weapons tightly in a subconscious readiness to act. The atmosphere was heavy with tension, pressing down on them from all sides. Eyes darted constantly, scanning for any hint of danger, while ears strained to catch anything unusual over the relentless drone of the engines.
The seaplane's journey was not just a physical one but a mental battle as well. Everyone knew what they had just done by going to fight Joseph. While that was tough they still felt they were in the midst of a journey through hell. What they were going back to was an island filled to the brim with Yeagerists armed to the teeth. The memory of the brutal port battle, where they had killed numerous foes to secure the plane, lingered heavily in their minds. The thought of returning to an island teeming with armed Yeagerists, many of whom viewed them as traitors, filled them with dread. They knew they were flying back into a hornet's nest, devoid of the Titan powers they once wielded, facing the prospect of an angry mob ready to exact vengeance. Yet, they had no other choice; there was nowhere else to go.
As the minutes ticked by, they mentally prepared themselves for what they believed would be their final confrontation.
The only person who appeared at ease was Joseph. He reclined in his metal seat with a serene smile, eyes closed, seemingly unperturbed by the impending threat. When the pilot announced that the port was in sight, everyone craned their necks to look out the windows. Their worst fears were confirmed: a vast crowd awaited them at the dock—soldiers and civilians alike. The sheer number of people, all potentially hostile, made some passengers wish they could avoid landing altogether. But the pilot's report of low fuel eliminated that option.
As the plane descended, a palpable sense of unease swept through the cabin. For some, it manifested as a gnawing feeling in their stomachs, possibly a mix of motion sickness and anxiety. Yet, through it all, Joseph remained astonishingly calm.
Hange: You are very relaxed, Joseph. Especially after everything that has happened in the last 3 days.
Joseph: It's the fact that I'm alive, I won't lie I wasn't sure I would make it back there.
Levi: You still might not.
Nanaba: I'm with Levi, boss. I mean, all those people down there...what are we gonna do?
Joseph: I'll figure something out, don't worry.
That didn't inspire much confidence. But it was all they had. As they slowly touched down on the choppy water some of them braced themselves against the plane to hold still. Others just blankly stared out into the endless blue of the sky and ocean, thinking it would be a good final look at life. The smell of salt infiltrated their noses as the door opened up next to the dock along with the noise of the people raising their voices.
Joseph stood up as the boat slightly rocked due to the waves slapping the hull. He approached the door while they all tightened their grips on their weapons until their knuckles turned white.
