The Night Before

Two months have passed since the day Joseph had returned to the headquarters of the Survey Corps. During that time, Joseph not only had trained alongside his squad, polishing their skills and teamwork, as well as interlinking Ilse in the squad. He also had taught Levi in the mastery of his mother's Kagune, now officially called Talon. Joseph was left widely impressed by how adept and proficient the short captain was with using Talon in practice. On some occasions, as Joseph watched Levi obliterating Titan dummies with the Kagune within fractions of seconds, the white-haired Scout remembered the Ackerman's perfect mastery in hand-to hand combat, along with ODM gear, and now equipped with Talon as well, he was sure Humanity's Strongest Soldier could definitely go up against a Titan Shifter all by himself, and walk out victorious. At least that was the hope.

At the same time, Annie and Armin had officially become a couple and told everyone. If before, they were just talking and spending some time together in the mess hall or after training, now they've become separable only during squad training and some of the nights. Their friends were extremely joyful for the two after hearing about their new status, especially Joseph. He was happy for two of his friends, but also he noticed how both became more productive and efficient during training after getting together.

While he couldn't spend as much time with his better half as the new pair of blonde lovebirds, he seized every opportunity to visit his loving blonde Queen in the capital. While rare, those days were the best in weeks as seeing yet again her immaculate royal face and her beautiful blue eyes were a joy of its own.

However, on his last visit, one week before the mission to Shiganshina, Joseph received exhilarating news.

He and Historia were laying together in the royal bedroom when she told him. It was a big surprise to him, but it was one that filled his heart and also made him shed a tear of joy and happiness.

Joseph: T-twins?

For a second, the world around him seemed to fade away. As he processed it in his mind, to him this was nothing short of a miracle, or two miracles. The comfort of the royal bed's silk had enveloped him and felt ethereal, as Historia took his slightly shaking hand.

Historia: Yeah, I know...it's crazy enough I got pregnant, and now the doctor says I'm carrying two. Isn't it incredible, darling?

Joseph was beaming with an enormous smile as his mouth was slightly open and he tried to make up sentences with his shaky voice.

Joseph: It's more than incredible....I...I can't even believe it, my love.

Just the fact of different species' achieving a cross-pregnancy is a miracle itself, but the fact that they would be blessed with two kids was even greater. Joseph felt his eyes well up in tears as Historia embraced him in a soft hug and kissed him on his cheek, while Joseph gently caressed Historia's slightly bulging stomach, savoring the profound joy of the moment.

Historia: Joseph?

Joseph: Yes?

Historia: Ummm...if one of them is a girl...I'd like to name her Ymir...is that okay with you?

Joseph: Of course, I know how important she was to you. We just need to think of the name for the other one then.

Historia leaned forward and planted a kiss on Joseph's lips and stroked his hair a little bit.

Historia: That will come later. For now let's just focus on what we have in front of us. Promise me you'll come back from the mission.

Joseph: I promise, Historia, I'll come back for you.

At this, Joseph gazed at Historia's stomach and placed his hand on it, caressing it softly.

Joseph: And for the both of you too.
