Chapter 21 - Kayla's surprise

21st April

Rosetta's POV:

"Here's to a great night girls" Kayla lifts her glass, me and Rosalie follow suit
"Given that this is your birthday night out it is odd your not drinking" Rosalie points out
"Hmmm yeah" I agree
"Okay, okay, I have news. This lady can't drink for a while as she is carrying a baby" Kayla places a hand over her stomach proudly
"What?!" Me and Rosalie's mouths fall open
"Your pregnant?" I ask still not believing it
"Yeah" she nods
"I can't believe Reg didn't tell me" I mutter to myself, Kayla rolls her eyes
"I told him I'd tell you girls tonight whilst he tells the boys"

"Wow we're like proper adults" Rosalie comments
"How did you not notice that until now?" I ask shaking my head
"I mean I thought of Kayla as the baby of the group because she still loved to party and mess about but here we are on a birthday night out and none of us are drinking" she points out
I tilt my head contemplating this for a second
"That's not just because we're adults it's because we're sensible" i tell her
"Yes but we could have a drink, I'm going to go and get some alcohol" she stands and heads to the bar as I turn to Kayla
"That was weird" i state
"Oh good, I wasn't sure" we both laugh waiting for Rosalie to come back.

She does shock me though when she places a glass down in front of me, I look up at her questioningly
"Come on its Kayla's birthday if she can't celebrate the right way we have to for her" she states sitting down and holding up her glass gesturing to mine
"Fine" I take a sip and the liquid burns my throat as it goes down "how can the boys drink this so much" my face scrunches up at the odd aftertaste
"Gets better the more you drink" Kayla informs
"I'm not believing that"
"I wonder what the boys are doing" Rosalie wonders aloud

James' POV:

"Here's to a good but sensible night" I raise my glass, remus and Regulus follow suit but Rory uses magic to turn the fire whiskey into water.

We all look at him confused
"Rosalie said she might have a drink tonight so one of us needs to stay sober for Pansy" he comments
"Ahh" we nod
"Speaking of responsibility I have an announcement" Regulus stands grabbing our attention "well lads believe it or not I'm going to be a dad"
Moony, who has been severely lacking in emotion since padf- Sirius was sentenced to Azkaban, smiles and gets up to hug Regulus.
"Congratulations"
"Thanks Rem, we're very excited, honestly I didn't think we'd end up having kids; Kayla isn't exactly the responsible type"
"You'll be getting no sleep and be aware she'll use the i pushed it out excuse for weeks" we turn to Rory "no but I'm sure it'll be great" he says unconvincingly.

Regulus sits down again looking a little defeated,
"Have you not found any connection with Pansy?" He asks Rory
"I don't know, it's hard for the father, the kid has to be older for it to really bond with me right? Or am I just really terrible at this?"
"I think it'd be a good start to call Pansy she instead of it, that might help" i tell him trying not to sound a bit put off
"Rosalie says that" Rory shrugs, he is a hard person to talk to, I couldn't spend so much time with him he's bumming me out
"Well this has gone awkward" Regulus forces out
"Are you and Rosalie having problems?" Moony asks gently
"No!" Rory rushes out but he quickly quietens down realising he had said it to loud, luckily Pansy and Harry are heavy sleepers. "No" Moony watches him clearly not believing him
"We won't say anything to her it's just I mean they've both got wives they may be able to help" Moony points between me and Regulus

Rory starts running his hand through his hair
"Me and Rosalie got together very quickly, we got married quickly, we had Pansy quickly. Everything's just happened so suddenly I guess I didn't realise this may not be what I wanted?" His voice raises at the end In question
"It will be hard for you both anyway, you both had very traumatic pasts, so you both will draw away from each-other for self preservation when things get hard. Have you spoken to her?"
"Of course not!" He exclaims as if it's the most ridiculous thing he's ever heard
"It's best to get it in the open, me and Rose have had issues when we've kept things from each other and it's put us In a bad spot before today" I intervene
"Are you thinking that maybe you and Rosalie are just not compatible?" Moony asks
"I have no idea, surely we have to be compatible we've been together for years" Rory sighs exasperated
"Things can change even if you've been together for years" Moony points out
"But before deciding anything talk to her" Regulus points out, Rory nods and we falls into a slightly more comfortable silence.

Timeskip

Rory left taking Pansy of course and the three of us remaining sit down waiting for the ladies to get back.

Remus breaks the silence looking between me and Regulus saying
"Don't say anything to your wives about what Rory said they'll probably pass it on to Rosalie"
Me and Regulus nod in sync.

It's not long before the girls apparate outside
"Hi James, Rem, Reg" Rose let's on as her and Kayla enter the living room to join us
"Congratulations Kayla" Moony nods at Kayla
"Thanks" she beams
"Well we should be off" Regulus takes Kayla's hand and waves us goodbye before leaving.
"I should be off to" Moony gets up and leaves without so much as a goodbye

Timeskip

I stay quiet as I get into bed beside Rose
"What is it?" She breaks the silence facing me
"What?" I ask confused
"You clearly want to say or ask me something so spit it out; I'm tired and I'll probably have to get up with Harry in an hour or two"
"How's Rosalie doing?" I ask trying to skirt around what I really want to say, but Rose rolls her eyes
"What did Rory say?" She sighs
"I never said anything about Rory" I reply defensively
"You didn't have to" she raises her eyebrows
"Rory may have implied that him and Rosalie are having problems" i tell her quietly
"And how did he imply that?" She asks impatiently
"Well he basically told us" i tell her my voice returning to its usual volume
"Could have just said that" she pauses "what exactly did he say?" I look around the room trying to figure out whether or not to say anything given that we said we wouldn't, but one look into her eyes and I spill all the events from the evening. Once I'm finished I watch her silently stew on this new information for a moment.

"Rosalie's let on a few times that they're having problems, I just didn't realise how bad they were" she pauses again "I'll speak to Rory" she kisses me on the cheek and lays back down turning away from me, I nudge her shoulder.
"What?" She replies in a huff
"You can't speak to Rory" I say adamantly
"Why not?" She turns around still laying down
"Me and the boys told him we wouldn't say anything" she rolls her eyes
"What are you? Teenage girls gossiping and secret sharing?" She stops and sighs again "sorry" she starts "I'll slip it into conversation subtly I won't say anything about what you just told me"
"Thanks love" I kiss her gently and then she pushes me back forcing me to lie down. I furrow my eyebrows suggestively but she simply turns over saying
"Don't get any ideas I'm just tired and I want to go to sleep, you didn't seem like you'd ever shut up" I let out a hearty laugh and turn towards her pulling her back against my chest. She sighs in content, I close my eyes and fall into a peaceful sleep.
