Ominis, still in his spot against the wall and bottom lip quivering, spoke and my eyes sprung to his.
Perfect little moons, exactly as pale as they should be.
The sickening fog and glow of the curse entirely absent.
If breathing had been hard before, the air shooting quickly back into my lungs nearly choked me.
Sebastian whipped around, hands tumbling from my face and I could have sworn I heard a bit of relief in his wavered voice.
"Ominis-"
He took a step back in his direction but the blonde flinched at the sound, tucking his shaking hands up against his chest.
"Stay back."
Every ounce of pain, betrayal, anger and sadness hissed in his words.
"It didn't work?" Sebastian sputtered.
My mind reeled.
Ominis quivered. "You didn't mean it. Not really."
"I-"
"Take your stupid relic. Should you die..." Ominis' words choked off. He swallowed deeply. "I'm not going to stand around and listen to you kill yourself..."
His boots ground against the dirt at our feet, lifting his wand from his pocket as quickly as he could and forcing his shaking body past mine towards the exit.
Sebastian's eyes met mine for half a second, silently pleading before he called out.
"Ominis wait! Please!"
The two boys were nearly sprinting back out of the catacombs, Sebastian only catching up as the moonlight illuminated the outside world, tugging on Ominis' arm.
He ripped his wrist from Sebastian's grasp, whirling around.
"Don't touch me."
"Please Ominis."
"You haven't listened to a word I've been telling you! Clearly you care none about my past, my experience... my pain. The Dark Arts are just some game to you. I never- never thought you would have done... that to me Sebastian."
It felt as though the moon was falling to the earth, stars around it in symphonic unison.
"It was for everyone's own good."
"Cursing me was for my own good?"
"If it meant saving Anne? Saving your heart?"
"You're killing me Sebastian."
"I love Atley- more than I ever thought to be fucking possible but I won't deny ever having felt- something... before... just not anymore." His fingers twitched gently at his sides, eyes on the ground between them as he shook his head. "You deserve the world Ominis. Anne deserves the world- she deserves someone as good and as kind as you. I may give you a whole hell of a lot of shit for it but its true."
Somehow the moon held itself above, pausing its catastrophic descent as something vaguely like a hiccup of a laugh tumbled from Ominis' lips though the tears still streaked his cheeks.
Sebastian pressed onward, no doubt spurred on by the small crack in the armor.
"She deserves that for life... and I plan to give her that opportunity."
Ominis stood slack jawed, twisting the hem of his shirt between his fingers.
The stars glittered down from above, a few wisps of clouds bumbling slowly overhead. The night air nipped at our noses
