Cracks and dots of light crashed beneath my lids as I braced for the pain. My fingers dug into the fabric over Sebastian's side and I felt the warmth and pressure of his arms as he squeezed me tighter to him. His heartbeat stroked my chest in frantic rushes, beat as hard as a drum.

Ripples of red sparks stirred just above us

and then

the screams

the anguish

the pain.

Familiar

but distant.

My eyes seized open as panic-stricken breaths clogged my lungs.

Sebastian?

His palms pressed firmly against my shoulders and our eyes met for a fraction of a second, confirming that the pain wasn't each other's. Our bones groaned and our muscles snapped us to our feet.

Ominis.

The world stilled

my blood felt heavy in my veins

and it was as if nothing that was happening was actually happening.

Ominis was crumpled in on himself inches from our heads, knuckles white as he clutched at his chest. Red sparks danced across his skin and his mouth was open, gasping for air but only letting out the stabbing pain in bursts of screams.

Sebastian's howl thundered against my ribs.

"CRUCIO!"

Finally prying my mind back into my body I swung around, wand raised and watched as Sebastian's curse crashed into the wand stream of a man in a black bowler cap. He deflected it and the two bright red lights sparked in the center as Sebastian grunted at the effort.

The man I'd seen in Hogsmeade that day with Victor Rookwood.

Theophilus Harlow if the papers were correct.

He sneered, initial curse lifting as his attention shifted and I could audibly hear Ominis' body relax.

I ran to his side and cradled his head in my lap. His breathing shallow and head lulling to the side, knocked unconscious from the pain.

Whips and crashes flashed between the rays of sunlight as Sebastian fought with reckless abandon. Sparks of red singed his skin and he hissed in pain but never stopped moving.

"You really ought to give up boy." Harlow taunted through glaring eyes.

Ominis whimpered beneath my fingers, head tilting against me as he stirred.

"Fuck that. I'll kill you." Sebastian grit through his teeth casting another unforgivable only to have it deflected again.

Fear plunged a dagger through my ribs and nicked my heart. I could feel the tingles of ancient magic beneath my nails and scrambled for my wand. Mind screaming to divert the magic now, rather than risk scorching Ominis' skin.

Warmth tickled my wrists as the bright ball of white magic molded at the tip of my wand and wound steady starlit streaks like bracelets up my arm.

Ominis' nose tilted up and his lips parted as his breathing began to even out.

I could feel my heartbeat through my blood and watched in awe as the light of the magic pulsed along with it.

Brighter, brighter

dimmer, dimmer

brighter, brighter

dimmer, dimmer.

A part of me.
