Sakura finally learns her daddy's name but things aren't what they expect.

Sakura clapped her hands in excitement when Layla slipped into the kitchen. "Mama!"

Ruffling Sakura's hair, Layla sagged into a chair at the table. "I'm so glad the meeting's over with."

Toga, familiar with his wife's mood after the monthly department faculty meeting, winced. Dark circles ringed her eyes and her hair looked like she'd ran her fingers through it a thousand times.

The dean of faculty was an eighty year old white man who had a bad case of sexism and refused to make Layla a full professor bypassing her for a male adjunct who had only been at the university for a year. Academia, particularly the field of history was very much an old boy's club.

Layla was never one to surrender to hard odds and kept pushing forward. Its one of the many things Toga admired about her.

Toga popped a top on a stout and slid it in front of her beside a plate of spanakopita. "Dr. Finnigan being a pain again?"

Layla took a swig of her beer, watching Sakura smear carrot puree with her hands on her white plastic tray. A glob of orange dangled from her nose. Grabbing a napkin, Layla wiped the puree off Sakura's face. "He's an asshole." She reached for Toga's hand and squeezed it. "But rumor is he's going to retire next year."

"That's good news."

"I'll believe it when I see it. Finnigan won't quit until he drops and the ambulance carts his corpse away. Men like him enjoy the prestige and worship of his colleagues to ever give it up."

"Ash...hole." A tiny voice piped up.

Layla blanched. Oh, shit. Did Sakura really say-

"Ash...hole." Sakura squealed excitedly making grabby motions toward Toga.

Toga's face crumpled in despair. "Did she just call me an asshole?"

"Ashhole." Sakura chirped again, giggling.

Guilt formed a knot in Layla's throat. Children were said to absorb things like sponges. She tried to be careful what she said around Sakura but tonight she was so tired and hadn't given her words much thought. "Toga...I think she thinks its your name." She clapped her hand over her mouth. "I'm so sorry."

Toga had been counting the days until Sakura said 'Papa' and she had ruined it!

Toga's shoulder sagged in defeat. "Its okay...dear. I don't blame you."

He really would forgive her anything. Layla realized, awed by the love the demon lord held for her. "I'm really sorry." She looked down. "I know this won't make up for it, but I'll look after Sakura. Why don't you go get a bath and relax?"

"Ashhole!"

Toga gripped her chin, tipped her head back. "Beloved, do not despair. I am not angry."

"Really?"

The corner of his mouth curled up wryly. "Disappointed but not angry." His thumb stroked her jaw, back and forth. "Its not the end of the world."

Layla, knew better sensing his disappointment through their bond. "It just feels like it, huh?"

"A touch."

Toga leaned down and pressed a kiss to her lips, keeping it chaste because of Sakura's presence. Layla leaned into the kiss, subdued though it was, enjoying the casual intimacy. She felt his yearning, his desire to sweep her into his arms and carry her into their bedroom.

Layla broke the kiss, grinning wickedly. "Later. After Sakura's in bed."

Toga's gaze darkened. "I'll hold you to it."

"Ashhole!"

His expression gentled as he switched gears to father-mode. "Alright, pup. Its time for your evening bath." He lifted Sakura from her chair into his arms. "Want your rubber ducky?"

"Ashhole!" Sakura squealed.

Cringing slightly, Toga maintained his smile. "I'll take that as a yes."

Happy 4th everyone! I hope you enjoyed this little drabble.
