"Whatever it is i'd be willing to help." Mr. Connors said as Kait reapered in her seat. The group then explained everything that had happened earlier that day and Kait explained that the first instance of this had happened before they went to the mall. "I see, I have a hypothesis, if we record each new time Kait appears and reappears then we can try to calculate when it is going to happen next. I predict that if we are not able to stop this entirely maybe we can predict when it will happen again." Mr. Connors explained. "So, how much time passed from when you disappeared here and the last?" Mr. Connors asked Kait. "Um, about seven hours or so." Kait explained. "I see, that seems like a good amount of separation, if you guys don't mind staying after school we can run a couple of tests." Mr. Connors explained as the group looked at each other and nodded. "This could take a couple of hours so if you kids don't get enough sleep and any other teachers scream at you all tomorrow i'll tell them to get off your backs." Mr. Connors said with a smile.
"So what's the test that you wanna run?" Rei asked. "I want to take a deep dive into Kait's mind. Kait I want you to sit in this desk for a few hours, every ten minutes or so I am gonna ask you how your feeling and write it down in this notebook, if your not comfortable telling me you can write it down yourself, your friends are also going to be subjecting you to extreme emotion every hour or so and we'll keep the hours in between each emotion as a control group. So does everyone get that?" Mr. Connors said as he looked over at the group.
A few hours had passed and Kait had not disappeared. Ruri had subjected her to happiness by showing her an assortment of cute animal clips, Steven had subjected her to laughter by showing her odd and funny videos, and Sel had subjected her to anger by showing her videos of people intentionally ruining drawings. "Mat I want you to do something for me, give Kait a couple of complements, I want to see what feeling this categorizes as for Kait." Mr. Connors said. "Oh um, ok." Mat said as the rest of the group just looked at Mat and Kait. "Well um uh ugh!?." Mat said as he then took a deep breath. "For starters I think that your art is amazing and the way you draw eyes is super cute, you have such a contagious smile and laugh that makes me feel fuzzy inside, when you look at me I just get this overwhelming feeling of comfort a feeling like you're always gonna look after me, you're a genuinely kind hearted person and I'm honestly jealous of how easily you can become friends with people, although I kinda wished you into existence it's been nice seeing you become someone that you wanna be." Mat said as he looked at Kait who had suddenly disappeared.
"Oh god what did I do?" Mat yelled. "Calm down this is a good thing, it's been about 4 hours or so since Kait last disappeared, all I have to do is record how much time it takes her to get back." Mr. Connors said as Kait appeared with her face completely red, Mat walked over to her saying sorry. "That's about two minutes or so, Kait can you please right down your feelings before you disappeared and what you felt while away?" Mr. Connors asked as Kait began to write and Mat walked over to his seat. Mr. Connors then looked at the notes that Kait had written down in the notebook as he nodded. "I'm seeing a common sort of thread throughout these experiences and the feelings tied to them. Mat you were at every instance Kait had disappeared today correct?" Mr Connors asked. "Yeah why?" Mat asked. "So my assumption is correct. All of these instances are triggered by thoughts of Mat or Mat being around." Mr. Connors explained.
"Wait what?" Mat said. "Whenever Kait thinks about you or whenever you are near it seems that Kait feels an overwhelming feeling and her body's response is to go to a place with no emotions and feelings at all but it seems that this place that was once a form of protection has turned into a place of despair. There is nothing in this space and eventually if Kait is in this place for too long she might become like the place itself...nothing." Mr. Connors explained. "You're saying that Kait might disappear forever!" Ruri yelled. "Sadly yes, it seems to me that the average amount of time Kait can last without going to that place again is five hours and the average amount of time she can spend in that place is 6 minutes. I'm not saying that the times can't go for longer or shorter but this should give all of you a good idea of what to be looking at." Mr. Connors explained as the group looked at each other.
"You know what, I don't care if science says that i'm the cause of this, I'll be by Kait's side for as long as she needs me, it's getting late so we should go home, thanks anyway Mr. Connors you helped out a lot." Mat said as he walked out of the room and headed towards Rei's car as everyone stared at him.
"Mattie are you okay?" Kait asked in Mat's room as Mat took off his shirt. "No, I mean yeah, I just can't believe that all this shit is my fault. Doing all those tests and then seeing you disappear when i finished my sentence angered me, i was so mad at myself, it was obvious too, i've been an asshole to you for a while and i've never said sorry!" Mat said as tears dripped down from his eyes. "You know what never mind." He said as he entered the bathroom and slammed the door.
Mat then got out of the bathroom minutes later as he dried his hair with a towel. Kait looked at him as she already laid in bed. "Get in." Kait said. "What do you mean, of course I'm gonna get in it's my bed, shouldn't you go to yours?" Mat asked as Kait tugged at Mat's arm causing him to fall onto his bed. "Why do you have to be like this?" Kait asked Mat as she hugged him. "What are you talking about?" Mat asked as he tried to stop himself from blushing. "Matthew, you know exactly what i'm talking about, how come everytime you open up about something or display a single emotion you just immediately try to take it back as if no one is willing to listen." Kait said. "I don't know, I guess I'm just scared right now with all the shit that is happening. Ever since I wished you into reality things have changed and I don't know if they're necessarily good, I'm so sorry Kait, I just want things to be normal." Mat said as tears rolled down his face.
"Things have changed, but I think that they are good, I don't remember much before I met you but I do remember it being really lonely like in the space where I disappear. I don't want to go there again." Kait said as Mat put his arm over her waist. "I'll make sure that you don't, just like you got my back me and everyone else has yours." Mat said as Kait smiled and tears rained from her face.
