Divergent: If War Hadn't Happened: BOOK ONE

Chapter 2.

I was awoken, with Peter in my thoughts. I got up and gasped for air, and touched my hand to my chest to realize my pulse, is beating fast. I had a dream that Peter hung me over the chasm again but, this time he let go, and I woke before I hit the bottom. I slid off my bed and put on my shoes, and walked out of the dormatories. I walked into the dining hall to see everyone snacking on there dinner, including Will and Christina. Christina then waves her hand for me to come sit with her, but I just shake my head and head out the doors to outside. I walk over to the railing of the chasm and just stand there. Watching the water splashing and tiny droplets hitting me. 

I then think of Al. How he stood over and he jumped and took his own life. I wonder how he stood there and decided life wasn't worth living for. Did he always think this in Dauntless? Did my comment before he left increase his desicion to jump into the chasm?

No. He tried to kill me. 

I look down at the bottom of the chasm and look how far down it is. A tear begins to fall down my cheek. And I don't bother to wipe it away,  I just let it fall. Just like Al, fall like Al.

I then hear footsteps beginning to come closer, and I wipe my hand over my face, to make the remaining water on my cheek dissapear. I continue to glance at the water, when Tobias joins me and overlooks the chasm aswell.

"This is nice" he says.

I just nod my head, not knowing was my response will be. Should I tell him about the jobs? I think I should, since we've only have another day to decide. And right now, I think he's my best option.

"You okay?" he asks. I stare into his eyes. A dark blue.

"Can we walk?" I say.

He just nods his head, and we walk along the path, when he reaches for my hand and laces his fingers with mine.

"I don't know what to do" I say. I don't bother looking up, I just stare at the ground, watching my feet taking steps forward. "About jobs."

"Well, what do you want to choose?"

I sigh. Here it goes. "I want to be in the government but, I also want to be a Dauntless Initation Trainer, so I can be near you."

He just nods his head, then I finally look up at him. I can't read his expression. It's just pure blank. I don't know what he's thinking.

"I think." he pauses "you should choose what you want to do."

"That doesn't really help. I mean Christina said the same exact thing. I don't know anymore, Tobias." I say. I brush my hair away from my face, to get it away. He then stops, and let's go of my hand. I stand there across from him.

"Tris.." He begins to say "I can't hold you back from what you choose to do."

"I know" I take a deep breath "It's just hard, alot of thought to put in, with such little time." I run my hand through my hair. "I just don't know"

He nods, then comes towards me and wraps his hands around me, while I do the same.

"It'll be okay" he says, then kisses the top of my head.

I wanna believe him when he tells me that, but I don't.

Tobias and I, walk back into the dining hall, where only a few people are found. The rest must be back into the dormatories. I glance over the room, to find Christina and Will, and they are at the far end table. I start toward the table and Tobias follows from behind.

"Hi" I say.

"Why didn't you come eat dinner earlier?" Christina asks.

"Because.." I try to find an excuse, when really it was because I needed to think of my desicion. "Because, I wasnt hungry" I bite the inside of my cheek, hoping that I pulled it off.

"Your lying" She says. "You bite the inside of your cheek when you lie. This is like the second time I've caught you"

Tobias gently then puts his hand on the small of my back. "Fine." I let out a breath. "I was thinking and I walked around. Needed to get some fresh air." Hopefully, that will pull it off, I just don't want to say anything infront of Will. I try not to do any gestures to show that I am lying because Christina was in Candor and she's able to read gestures, when people lie.

"Oh okay. Well, Will and I, are going to go hangout, do you want to come?" She glances over at me, then Tobias, then back at me.

"Sounds great but, I'm going to go with Four." I then clutch onto his hand. Will notices, then looks down at both of our hands together, but he doesn't say anything. He just looks back up at me and Tobias.

"I'll see you later then." she waves to me and Tobias, while her and Will leave the building holding hands.

"What do you want to do?" turning around, to ask him.

"Back to my place?" he asks.

I nod my head, and we start toward his room. When we arrive, he slips his shoes off and lies on his bed, moving back to give me a spot. I go and lie next to him and he puts his hand over my waist, tugging me closer to him.

"You tired?" he asks, his breath ticking my neck.

I nod my head.

"Sleep" he says.

I close my eyes, and drift off into sleep, into my own world. A world, where I don't have to worry.
