The next day Stiles had called a locksmith who has since been and gone, meaning that Stiles know gets the fantastic opportunity to go through his father's old office.
The room is musty and covered in dust. So, Stiles opens up the window and gets to cleaning. He's already decided that he's going to keep all the furniture in this room. Stiles and Jeremy have already been going room to room methodically cleaning as they slowly remove furniture from the house and take it to either the second-hand shop or to the dump. Most of the house is cleaned up they only need to focus on painting and recarpeting certain rooms before they start looking for new furniture.
Once the office is clean, Stiles starts looking through the draws and filing cabinets. In them, he has found several case files that it seems his father failed to close. As Stiles reads through each of them, he can't help but wonder what his life would have been like if they never got into that car crash. His mom would have died anyway but Stiles would have still had his dad. God he barely even remembers the man.
When Stiles gets to the fourth case file, he starts to notice something that all the case files have in common. They all have his gut screaming supernatural. There are several animal attacks that have wolf hair on the victims, telling Stiles that it was a werewolf that did it. One woman was scratched up so badly that everyone was surprised she wasn't dead and then shortly after being taken to the hospital she disappeared in the dead of night. One teenager died via an arrow to the throat and the mountain of a man who tried to claim the body apparently had colour changing iris's according to his father's separate notes.
Stiles doesn't find a file on the Hale fire which makes sense considering the car crash happened a few months before the fire. He's so focused on reading through the different cases and trying to work out what supernatural creature was involved that he doesn't notice when Jeremy enters the room.
"Stiles?" Jeremy calls out.
Stiles looks up wide eyed before looking back down around him and realising that he's surrounded by files and his father's notes.
"Yeah?" Stiles asks.
"We're supposed to be going to the McCall's for dinner in twenty minutes." Jeremy reminds.
"We are? Crap! Your right we are." Stiles gets up and proceeds to have to hold onto the desk on account of his foot going to sleep.
"What were you doing?" Jeremy inquires as he takes in the mess of papers.
"I was going through my dad's cases. It seems that he took home a copy of all the cases he was unable to close, and I found something. Each case has a supernatural element to them." Stiles informs.
"How could you possibly know that? I doubt they wrote down 'supernatural?'." Jeremy questions.
"I didn't see it at first either but several of them are animal attacks where wolf hair was found on the bodies and wolves haven't been in California in like...sixty years. And then there is this one, a car crash killed two people presumed to have killed three. It happened on the full moon; the car was covered in claw marks but all of them on the inside of the car." Stiles explains.
"Okay...why are only two people considered dead but one presumed dead?" Jeremy asks.
"Because they never found the body of one Malia Tate. They assume that coyotes dragged her body into the woods and ate her, but I have a different theory entirely." Stiles states.
"Which is?" Jeremy pushes.
"It says in the case file that Malia was adopted. And my research tells me that when children born as type two weres get to a certain age they will shift if under extreme stress. I think Malia was a were and something happened on that car ride, and she turned, the car crashed, and Malia ran." Stiles explains.
