Maisie paid the cab driver and thanked him as she lugged her duffel bag out of the backseat. Running out of the rain she went through the door of the coffee shop instead of her actual apartment entrance, emitting a chime of the bell overhead. The café was mostly empty aside from an older couple that sat by the window, and Darrell, her favorite employee, who was currently hunched over, wiping down a dirty table.

"Well well well, look who's back," Darrell said with a smile. "How was military school, huh troublemaker?"

Despite the tease, Maisie was happy to see him.

Darrell was a 15 year old boy who began working at the café about a year ago. At first, Maisie's grandmothers were just doing him and his mother a favor, giving him the rather unnecessary designated job of busing tables. However after months of 'hard work,' he was promoted to cashier—who still had the job of cleaning—and easily became one of their most reliable workers.

He was the closest employee to her age, so Maisie appreciated his company during the winter and spring break.  He was tall with dark skin and black coils. He was kinda cute. Although those were not her words, but both her grandmothers, and even though they were 60 year old lesbians, Maisie had to somewhat agree with their sentiment.

But it didn't matter how cute he was. He was a terrible flirt. Meaning he was a flirt, who flirted too often with customers, and terrible, as in he was really bad at said flirting.

Maisie began to keep tally of all the rejections he received from teenage girls during his shifts. She attempted to hang up the tally sheet as a sign on the café wall, '100th rejectee gets a free small cappuccino' she wanted it to read. Unfortunately Nana Babs vetoed this idea.

"See they forgot to shave your head," he pointed to her long blonde hair that had become wet and frizzy from the rain.

Maisie shifted the weight of her bag on her shoulder. "You missed a spot," she pointed down at the table he was still working on.

"Not even back 2 minutes and your already tryna boss me around again," he said.

"Well if you did it right you wouldn't need to be bossed around," she smirked.

"Oh! Idea! how about you do it," he threw his rag into her chest, dampening her shirt even more so. The irritated look on her face must of been amusing to him because he smiled and saluted her with a "thanks."

Maisie ran the rag over the spot of the table he had missed. "So what I'm gathering here is that you missed me dearly," she said.

"Oh yeah definitely. You doing all my work. I really took it for granted before. Now, I vow not to, sooo the trash needs taking out when your d-"

He was cut off by a flying rag hitting and sticking to his face.

Maisie took the stairs in the back of the shop up to the 2 bedroom apartment. Her first greeter almost knocked her off her feet. Hercules, the large doberman dog pounced on her chest attempting to lick her face, making Maisie laugh and coo at him. She had definitely missed him too.
