They didn't stop to rest until they came to a room the size of a gymnasium with old marble columns holding up the roof. They stood at the doorway, listening for sounds of pursuit, but heard nothing. Apparently they'd lost Luke and his minions in the maze.

"Did—Did we lose them?" James panted for breath. "That was—Holy—Oh my god." He fell to the floor, holding his hand over his chest like he'd just run a marathon.

"But that was the right way though," Rachel said, catching her breath.

"The right way!?" Annabeth demanded. "How can you say that?"

Then Percy realized something else: Mrs. O'Leary was gone. He didn't know when she'd disappeared.

"What happened to Mrs. O'Leary?" Maisie asked, frowning in confusion as she scanned behind them.

"I don't know," Percy admitted, feeling dreadful. Mrs. O'Leary had just saved all of their lives. And now she was gone. He hoped she had gotten away from the mayhem.

Ethan collapsed on the floor. "You people are crazy." He pulled off his helmet. His face gleamed with sweat.

"We're crazy?" Maisie challenged. "We were there by accident. Seems like you were there by choice. Unless I'm missing something."

Ethan glared at her. "You're missing a lot. There's no right side here. The gods never cared about us. Why shouldn't I—"

"Sign up with an army that makes you fight to the death for entertainment?" Annabeth said. "Gee, I wonder."

Ethan struggled to his feet and looked at Maisie. "I'm not going to argue with you. You got lucky. Try sitting in that Hermes cabin for years, with no recognition. You might feel differently then."

Maisie liked to think that wasn't true. Sure, she'd feel the resentment Ethan felt, but she doubted that would affect her stance in the war. Though, she couldn't really attest to that, could she. The truth was, she had been lucky. Lucky enough that her father did claim her. Of course, it took her coincidentally ending up in the underworld to prompt him into doing so, but perhaps he would have gotten to the task eventually, even without her surprise visit.

Even luckier, she ended up liking Hypnos. He was an alright guy. It really just seemed that he did not understand the point to claiming her if he didn't have a cabin. Until she explained to him the real significance behind it.

Perhaps some of the minor gods' apathy was a result of the paramount gods slapping the label of 'unimportant' on their subordinates' foreheads. Though a pass couldn't quite be granted to the detachment shown. She liked to think Hypnos would pay a pretty penny to Iris, for a message to her, if she ever sauntered down the path that Ethan was currently on. But again, she was lucky enough to never have to confirm that theory.

"I'm sorry," she said.

"Don't apologize to him!" Annabeth said, outraged.

Ethan looked a little startled, but he steeled himself and dusted off his hands. "Thanks for the help, but I'm out of here."
