The dirt tunnels turned to stone.

They wound around and split off and were totally confusing, but Rachel and James had no trouble guiding. Well, Percy thought Rachel deserved a little more credit for guiding. He wasn't sure if it was because James couldn't see through the Mist as well as her, or if it was because the boy wasn't generally as confident as her. Either way Rachel seemed to have taken the reins, but she seemed more than fine with that. She also appreciated James's subtle conformations. Which was only something he could give her, considering the other four couldn't see a lick of what Rachel and James could. Percy told her they needed to get back to New York, and she hardly even paused when the tunnels offered a choice.

Rachel and Annabeth started up a conversation as they walked. Annabeth asked her more about her background, but Rachel was evasive, so they started talking about architecture. It turned out that Rachel knew something about it from studying art. Maisie jumped at the opportunity to talk about the sole thing she was for sure her and Rachel had in common: art. She asked Rachel again what kind of things she liked to paint. It felt a little forceful at first, but eventually they eased into conversation.

Maisie was glad for that. The awkward relationship between her and the redhead had been bothersome. It was hard to explain. Maisie didn't care if people liked her or not. She didn't care to try hard to make friends with everyone. But Rachel had done them a big favor, and had taken a big risk, by being their guide. It would feel unnatural to be only mere acquaintances with the the girl who was guiding them on a literal death quest.

"I mostly paint nature stuff. Landscapes, and woodlands and mountains, stuff like that," Rachel explained.

Maisie nodded in intrigue. "You really like nature," she noted.

"Yeah, I do." She seemed hesitant yet passionate when she added, "I hate seeing stupid big corporations destroying it. It's terrible."

"I think so too. You'd like Grover," Maisie said, "He could talk about wildlife rights forever."

Rachel smiled. "How about you, Maisie? You like to make art, right?"

Maisie couldn't remember ever telling the girl that she liked art too. Perhaps it was just obvious from the way Maisie butted into the conversation once she heard them discussing it.

"I draw more than I paint," She said. Though her drawings were much more frivolous and random than what Rachel described. "I always found painting to be harder. But I can make a mean tree!"

Rachel laughed at that. Annabeth steered the conversation back to historical paintings that included architecture, which Maisie had very little to add to. Rachel and Annabeth talked about different facades on buildings around New York—"Have you seen this one," blah, blah, blah. Maisie slowed up a little to pick up conversation with James, but kinda regretted it once he started talking about high school.
