Summer came to an end. Maisie and Percy sat in the back of the car, heading into the city. Percy was playing with his newly gifted seashell bracelet on his wrist.
"Is it itchy?" Maisie asked, eyeing his wrist.
"No."
"Cause you don't have to wear it if it's itchy. It's okay."
Percy smiled and rolled his eyes at the insecurity she had towards the present she'd made for him. "Not itchy, Mae."
Argus dropped Maisie and Percy off in front of the café. Percy was going to surprise his mother at work. She worked at the candy shop, Sweet on America, which was right down the street from the coffee shop. Maisie offered for him to come into her place for a minute to see Hercules. Percy accepted and they opened the glass doors.
"Listen, she's not here," said Darrell, who was talking to some boy at the counter. "And I don't know how she'd feel about you suddenly showing up like this."
Maisie stopped dead in her tracks at the doorway.
Percy stopped next to her, confused on why she had gone so rigid. "What?"
She was staring at the boy who was having a conversation with Darrell. The boy couldn't have been much older than Percy. He looked about 15, with strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes. He looked familiar to Percy, but he wasn't sure where he had seen him before.
"C'mon Darrell," the blonde boy said. "Is she really not here, or do you just not want me around?"
"Both."
Another boy, who looked around the same age as the blonde, though a little shorter, with short brown hair underneath a snapback cap, approached the counter and grabbed the blonde's shoulder. "C'mon man. Your sister's not here. Can we go?"
Oh. Percy connected the now very obvious dots.
"Hang on, Clyde," Maisie's brother said before he turned back to Darrell. "Do you know where she is? Or when she'll be back?"
"She's at Summer camp, Kyle," Darrell answered.
Kyle quirked an eyebrow. "Summer camp?"
"Yup. Been going there since last year. Not that you would know."
Maisie's brother sighed. "I know I messed up, okay? But that's why I'm here. I wanna fix it."
"Little too late if you ask me," Darrell said absentmindedly as he stacked a few cups behind the counter.
"That's not for you to decide!" Kyle argued. "If she wants me to leave, I will. But can't you at least help me try and—"
Percy finally let go of the glass door. It shut and the bell chimed over their heads, resulting in all three boys turning to look at the demigods.
