The school year was sure going by slow.
Which was maybe a good thing. Hades knows Maisie and her friends from camp could use a break from the all the excitement and threats to humanity. But at this point, she was ready to get back on the field. Classes were crawling.
Especially History class, which was were she currently was. Redcrest High School wasn't all that bad so far. At this rate, she expected to make it through the semester with blowing the place up. Fingers crossed.
It wasn't bad starting the school year off with a friend either. She never had that before. James sat in the desk next to her, eloquently reading allowed an excerpt from the textbook aloud to the class. She wasn't really listening though, too busy looking in her binder. Or more specifically, the picture she had pinned inside.
It was a picture Sienna had sent her of Tilly and Tucker dressed up for Halloween this year. Tilly was Tinkerbell. Her hair in a bun and wearing a green dress; no wings. Tucker was a superhero. No one specific, likely because they couldn't afford an on-brand costume. But he seemed happy with just the red sheet tied around his neck like a cape. They were both holding their dirty pillow cases that had yet to be filled with treats. Tilly was near strangling Tucker in a side hug.
Maisie couldn't decide if Sienna sending her the photo was a nice gesture, or just plain mean.
Initially, she felt sour about receiving the photo. Her first thought was that she used to make much better costumes for her younger siblings. She made Tucker a Bigfoot costume one year, mask and all.
Then she would just feel sad again. When was the last time she got to be with them when trick-or- treating? When would the next time be? Probably never.
Then she would get mad again. Since when was Sienna there for trick-or-treating? When did she ever make Maisie a costume and take a happy picture of her? The last time Maisie ever dressed up, she had been 9. And even then, her costume options were limited, since she carried baby Tucker all night long. She had been Princess Peach, while Tucker was Toad. Maisie remembered coloring red circles on a diaper and sticking it on the poor boy's head. But he was a baby, so he couldn't be humiliated.
Sienna had scolded her at the end of the night for that costume, only laying off after Kyle told her off. Saying, "You could of had a say in his costume if you were here! But you and Blair both went to parties instead!"
Looking back, Maisie was glad Kyle had been mad about that. Someone had to be. Because she hadn't been. She hadn't been mad at anyone. Not mad a Sienna for her comments, mainly because she was used to it; She wasn't mad at Blair for choosing to party with kids several years older than her, rather then taking her younger siblings trick-or-treating. Because at least Blair thought Tucker's costume was genius, and told Maisie she did a great job. She hadn't been mad at Kyle for only carrying Tucker for 10 minutes of the 2 hour long night, despite the fact that he was older and bigger than her.
