Maisie scrubbed her eyes and stood up

Maisie scrubbed her eyes and stood up. They'd been digging through rubble for what felt like hours. And while the larger part of her wanted to keep looking for Bianca, she knew they were at risk of the skeletons catching up to them soon if they didn't start making some headway.

Percy discreetly held out the Mythomagic statue to her. "This is what she picked up. She wanted to give it to Nico..."

Maisie felt her eyes get glassy again. She gently pushed Percy's hand down, indicating for him to put it back in his pocket. As long as no one else was blaming themselves, she didn't think it was necessary for the others to know that Bianca had awoken the metal giant. They should just remember her sacrifice and bravery.

At the edge of the dump, they found a tow truck so old it might've been thrown away itself. But the engine started, and it had a full tank of gas, so they decided to borrow it.

Thalia drove. Zoe was in no condition to drive.

The three girls sat in the truck while the boys sat in the bed of the pickup.

It was quiet for a while. Maisie could hear the muffled voices of Percy and Grover in the back. She stayed looking out the window at the rising sun. Zoe was sitting next to her muttering a little prayer to Artemis. Maisie tried to scoot closer to the window to give her some privacy.

Even though the prophecy had said that they'd lose people, Maisie still couldn't believe it actually happened. It was silly really, because they were constantly going on deadly quests. Losing people seemed like a given. But Maisie just never thought hard on those tragic probabilities before. Maybe she had been subconsciously shielding herself, afraid she'd lose herself in her own anxiety. But for the first time, she realized that there was a great possibility, definability, of losing more people she really cared about before this whole thing was said and done.

Suddenly Maisie felt very small. Very young. They all were. Aside from Zoe of course. But even immortality didn't mean escape from death. Bianca was proof of that. Maisie had almost forgotten how young the girl really was. When she became a Hunter, she had an older, more confident aura about her. Like you could see it in her eyes that she had been blessed by a goddess.

But Bianca was only 12. A 12 year old little girl who just wanted a chance to try and make things right with her brother. And now she was gone. And Maisie couldn't save her.

And Nico. What would they tell Nico?

Thalia was fidgeting with the radio. 'Time of Your Life,' by Green Day started playing.

Maisie started humming quietly to herself and tapping her fingers against her knees. It was a small fit in the truck. She hoped she wasn't annoying the other girls. She just needed something else to focus on.

"You know Green Day?" Thalia asked.

Maisie nodded. "Mhm. I think I only know they're more popular songs. But I like them."
