Kyle paid for himself and Maisie to spend an hour at the arcade. While they were playing Street Fighter, Kyle looked at her hand that was on the joystick and said, "What happened to your hand?" he pointed to the stubborn burn mark on her knuckle that she received during the first summer she found out she was a half-blood—from when the Fury's flaming whip had struck her. Maisie had just accepted at this point that the mark was here to stay.
"I burned it on a curling iron," she answered.
Kyle looked at her quizzically. It would have been a believable lie, except Maisie never used any hot tools on her hair. She didn't even own any. The only time she'd ever had her hair in intentional curls had been on Circe's island.
Maisie ignored his puzzled look. She hadn't seen him in two years. For all he knew, she curled her hair all the time. She yelled at him to pay attention to the screen as she started kicking his Street Fighter character's ass.
They continued to play a bunch of two player games that Maisie kept winning. She wasn't sure if her brother was letting her win out of guilt or not. So before they began their second game at the mini basketball hoops, she said, "Let's make a bet."
That definitely seemed to wake Kyle up out of whatever intentional losing streak he had going before. Maisie could tell now that he was trying his hardest. Still, ten minutes later, she was holding a small stuffed turtle to her chest that she had exchanged for their points at the desk, while Kyle was still sulking.
Percy walked through the arcade door looking so over life itself that Maisie had to try not to laugh at his face. Clyde was following behind him, chatting nonsense. Apparently her friend hadn't managed to shake her brother's friend.
Percy spotted her and looked relieved. He walked towards them, but Clyde slid his way infront and held out a chocolate bar to Maisie. "Your friend said this was your favorite, so I got it for you," he smiled smugly.
Percy rolled his eyes and said, "No my mom gave that to us for free to give to her."
"Whatever," Clyde said as he handed Maisie the chocolate bar.
"How'd you know we were here?" Maisie asked.
"We went back to your place and you weren't there, so we went looking," Percy answered.
Clyde looked in between his friend and Maisie. "So are you guys like—cool now?"
Maisie didn't really feel like she had to answer to this boy she didn't know, but Kyle fidgeted with his hands, as if he felt it wasn't up for him to decide. So Maisie said, "Pretty much." It wasn't a lie, but she also knew it was also an annoyingly positive look on the situation.
Kyle didn't look convinced, which was refreshing.
"Oh, Percy. This is my brother," Maisie stated the obvious, but she felt the need to introduce them. "Kyle, this is my friend, Percy. He goes to camp with me."
