Distance was shorter in the Labyrinth. Still, by the time Rachel and James led them back to Times Square, it felt like they'd pretty much run all the way from New Mexico. The group climbed out of the Marriott basement and stood on the sidewalk in the bright summer daylight, squinting at the traffic and crowds.Percy led the way into an alley, where he could get a nice echo. Then he whistled as loud as he could five times.
"You know," James muttered to Maisie, "Out of everything that I've seen you guys do today, this is the most impressive."
Maisie snorted as her friend brought his fingers to his mouth and tried to copy Percy's whistle, but he only managed a fart noise. Tyson pointed and laughed.
A minute later, Rachel gasped. "They're beautiful!"
A flock of pegasi descended from the sky, swooping between the skyscrapers. Blackjack was in the lead, followed by four of his white friends.
Yo, boss! He spoke in Percy's mind. You lived!
"Yeah," Percy told him. "I'm lucky that way. Listen, we need a ride to camp, quick."
That's my specialty! Oh man, you got that Cyclops with you? Yo, Guido! How's your back holding up?
The Pegasus, Guido, groaned and complained, but eventually he agreed to carry Tyson. Everybody started saddling up—except Rachel and James.
"Well," James said to Maisie, "I guess I'll see you later? You'll think about what I said about school, right? I'm sure we could both use a friend going into high school."
"I'll mention it to my grandmas," Maisie promised, "See if they think it'd be a good fit, or if they can afford it."
"And you'll try and stay safe, right? Even though I know that's not exactly your specialty."
"It's not," Maisie agreed, stealing a glance at Percy, who was talking to Rachel. "But we'll be okay."
James followed her line of sight and gave her an encouraging nod. "You guys will work it out."
Maisie tore her eyes away from the two and looked back at him. "What do you mean?"
"Word of advice though," James whispered, insinuating Maisie did know what he meant, "Maybe tell him why you're mad. Cause I don't think he's gonna figure it out. I mean, even I'm not totally sure."
Maisie looked down at the ground, fidgeting with her fingers. "It's hard to explain."
James nodded slowly. "Well, I say still try. Because what you guys have is really special, and—"
Maisie turned red and stared at his shoes, quickly saying, "I don't know what you're talking about."
James looked tempted to laugh at her embarrassment. "C'mon. I kinda knew it the second you rejected me—"
